    Denver Bound!

I really haven’t mentioned too much about my new position at Leadership Network.  My official title is “Director of the Teaching Church Multiplier Fund”… that’s a pretty fancy title just to say that I get the opportunity to work with really innovative churches (churches that are doing new things and doing it well) and working with them to help disseminate their innovation to other churches.  It could be in the area of Externally Focused Churches, or Multi-Site Churches, or churches who have an active recovery ministry.  LN works with many different types of innovation, equipping leaders to get ideas and share them with other like-minded churches.  I’m really excited about the possibilities and the difference that my help with LN can possibly make in churches across the country.  I get to work with the best of the best; learn from them; and then help them teach others.  (And they pay me to do this!) It’s gonna be a blast.

I do still plan on keeping the MMI website up and going, although I won’t have as much time to devote to it.  (I think right now I have about 50 things in the queue to blog about, so there are plenty of ideas; just not enough time!  To help out, I’ve recruited a group of talented writers that will help me over the next few months with some great content to keep us all engaged.  If you’d like to join that team, just jot me an email to … I’d love to discuss the possibilities with you.

We should be an hour outside of Denver now.  I’ll drive to Longmont tonight for my meeting in the morning; then be on an afternoon flight back to Ohio.  Short trip… should be fun.

    Blessings,

    Todd

Well, I’m on my way to Denver right now… cruising at 24,000 feet (a little lower than usual according to the pilot because of some upper level turbulence). I’m looking forward to a meeting with some folks to talk about “Externally Focused” churches. (This is part of my new job at Leadership Network. Externally focused churches are churches that minister to their communities through all kinds of outreaches; from homeless shelters to medical clinics; from car care ministries; to feeding the hungry. I’ll be meeting with a couple of guys that know what they're doing… Eric Swanson (a colleague at Leadership Network) and Rick Rusaw actually wrote the book on Externally Focused churches (I’m not kidding… the book is actually called “The Externally Focused Church”. It will be fun to talk with them and a small group of others about a new conference they are developing that will help equip other churches to be externally minded. It should be a lot of fun.

what I want to know is how you posted to your blog from 24,000 feet up! http://www.mondaymorninginsight.com/images/smileys/smile.gif and, Todd, it’s great to work along side of you, albeit virtually, at Leadership Network. It’s been a great first month, and I think many more great ones are ahead!

Well, DJ… I did actually type that at 24,000 feet; but cut and paste at about 4,300 feet (I think that’s what the elevation is here in Longmont.  http://www.mondaymorninginsight.com/images/smileys/smile.gif

For those of you looking in on our conversation, DJ is also working with LN as the Director of Digital Initiatives.  He’s also putting together a leadership community of Asian-American churches that will start meeting in the next year.  It’s been great to get to know you a little as well, DJ… look forward to working with you.

Also, DJ has a great blog over at http://www.djchuang.com.  Check it out!

That book is NOTHING but trouble!  Our “former” Senior Pastor went to a seminar on that concept, came home and preached that it would be “just like what Jesus would do” (http://www.jlwjwd.net) and then it started.

People amped up the whining about why they should have to be concerned about their neighbors when THEY want the church to be about them… We don’t have enough money or people to serve others… We don’t like that you are telling us to love our neighbors…. Who is our neighbors…

It was a real firestorm!  Now that our pastor is leaving (today actually) people are convinced that if they fight hard enough we can go back to being comfortably asleep during the sermon and content with the mediocre attendance of a half-way commited congregation.   Others are finally learning (the hard way) that vision and new ideas have NO PLACE in the kingdom.   The apostle Paul surely didn’t mean we still need to do outreach when he said “HE had become all things to all people.”  If he has already done it why can’t we just preach his sermons inside our pretty little buildings and expect them to come a runnin’, convertin’, and changing their ways to be just like us righteous folk?

Trouble, I tell ya.  THEM folks in Colorada is up to no good!
