Furnishing Your Church in Tough Financial Times

    Bookmark and Share

The economy has hit churches hard all over the country. But, even in the hard times, you still have to make major purchases from time to time. George Kreger from SaveYourChurchMoney.com has some great suggestions:

    1. Major “players” need major profit margins! You have received those catalogs for years from the same, recognizable companies. They carry a wide assortment of products from various manufacturers. And they tell you repeatedly that they will save you money. But do they? While I wish it wasn’t the case, the answer is rarely if ever! Read on to learn why.

    2. Low overhead by the manufacturer and dealer provides the real savings for you! Those catalogs, ecommerce websites, buildings, employees, advertising, etc. all cost dollars that have to be recovered. Since you (the customer) are their only source of income, you pay for those expenses. By purchasing from someone you trust, but who does not have all those expenses, real savings are truly available!

    3. Buying “direct” rarely saves you money! A number of manufacturers sell direct to churches and also through dealers. They often will claim that you can buy direct and save! What they don’t tell you is that they will not sell below a certain price point when selling direct. The reality is if they want dealers to sell their products, they cannot at the same time “undersell” those same dealers. For example, one chair company sells a particular model of chair for $39.95 to churches direct. We can buy the same chair for seven dollars less than a “direct” customer and then pass real savings on to you!

George has some other tips... you can read them here...

A couple of years ago my church bought chairs through George’s company.  It was a great experience! Everything arrived on time and was fantastic quality stuff. Saveyourchurchmoney.com made me look way smarter than I really am. (How many pastors know about church furniture?)

As a congregation going from pews to chairs there was a lot of politics to work through. We knew we had to redo our seating situation but the people REALLY wanted new pews! When I was able to put the costs side-by-side and then provide a demonstration to the leaders (complete with a sample chair) they were sold in minutes. As part of the same project I was able to actually sell our old pews to another church in less than a week! Literally, I listed them on Tuesday, had a buyer on Friday, check on Monday and their truck came the next Wednesday. Check out http://usedpews.org/ for more info on that.

In our situation, the proceeds from the pews actually cut the price of chairs by 30% on top of what George was able to do.

Long store short, I’m glad to see this post here. Saveyourchurchmoney.com rocks!

I think the church can give people some gift such as game cards, nfl jerseys, CDs, something people would like to hold.

I follow some tips when i get through tough financial times and i can suggest some of the tips for you:-

1- Keep your expectations low and you will rarely be disappointed. This may not seem right to you until you spend some time thinking about how it applies to your own personal life. Use your faith or beliefs; maybe you consider that God, the universe or nature provide us with the tools for any situation; whatever the source, it is up to us to use those tools to keep body and soul together.

2-Be prepared to let time assist emotional pain. As for emotional rough times, there is an old saying that “time heals all wounds”, and that everything looks better from a distance. Let yourself grieve, cry, wail or whatever it may be that makes you feel like you can continue on another day
