Job Satisfaction:  What is Expected of me?

    Bookmark and Share

You can read all of Tony’s post on this subject here...

    1.  Do I know what is expected of me at work?

    2.  Do I have the materials and equipment that I need in order to do my work right?

    3.  At work, do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?

    4.  In the past seven days, have I received recognition or praise for doing good work?

    5.  Does my supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about me as a person?

    6.  Is there someone at work who encourages my development?

    7.  At work, do my opinions seem to count?

    8.  Does the mission or purpose of my company make me feel that my job is important?

    9.  Are my coworkers committed to doing quality work?

    10.  Do I have a best friend at work?

    11.  In the past six months, has someone at work talked to me about my progress?

    12.  This past year, have I had opportunities at work to learn and grow?

Leave your comments below on question one above… do you know what is expected of you?

Tony Morgan recently published a list that Marcus Buckingham originally came up with on measuring your job satisfaction. This is a great list, and I want to take a posts to actually dig into those one by one...

The first question is this: Do I know what is expected of me at work? How would YOU answer that question. (Please answer only if you work in a church setting...)

I'd love to hear your comments... click here to leave your comments and read Tony's original post...

When you are a church planter and a lead pastor, just about everything.  The buck stops with you a lot.

To make a list would be insane.

Knowing your expectations is huge!!  I’ve been an associate for 2 1/2 years now and I have an extremely vague job description (which I learned this past week, the Sr. Minister has no idea what’s on that job description).  The one time I know if I’m meeting expectations is during my “annual review”, which I’ve had once since I’ve been here.  I just assume I’m doing what they want me to do.

There are some questions that are hard to answer but it is a great list. It makes you want to just sit down and ponder.

We have had a lot of transition in the year that I’ve been on this staff in a paid position. And writing one’s own job description can be a hard thing to do. Been there. Done that. Here’s what’s expected of me:

Love God. Love People. Be the hands, feet, eyes, ears, and mouth of Him whatever that may look like in any given moment.

Of course - I am looking forward to the day when I am no longer on staff there!

As the “senior” guy with no associate yet… it is in the state of “whatever”

IN one sense, as a paid pastor, you have as many unofficial job descriptions as you have members/attendees.  Often, it is their “unofficial” expectations which become the reason a pastor “transitions.”  Unless there is a CLEAR description and a STRONG team defending the boudaries of that description… good luck defining it.

As for MY JOB DESCRIPTION here in rural America… nope, not spoecific enough to protect my family from well intentioned dragons or time suckers…

I agree with Leonard.  I was afraid to even look at the list.
