New Blogging 10 Commandments Given to Church Leaders

    Bookmark and Share

    What do you think?

I actually think it’s pretty good.  I look at the list and see many commandments broken on a regular basis.  #10 is a tough one for me at times.  #5 can be one that I have to guard myself with as well (especially with many watchdog bloggers)… It’s easy for me to throw stones at people who throw stones.

What would you add or subtract?

The Evangelical Alliance in London has written up some guidelines for Christian Bloggers. This is in response to how quickly blogs (even ones with pastors as the primary audience) can descent into vitriol. According to the Telegraph, the commandments are based on those the original ten commandments. Here they are:

    Ten commandments for bloggers:
1 You shall not put your blog before your integrity
2 You shall not make an idol of your blog
3 You shall not misuse your screen name by using your anonymity to sin
4 Remember the Sabbath day by taking one day off a week from your blog
5 Honour your fellow-bloggers above yourselves and do not give undue significance to their mistakes
6 You shall not murder someone else's honour, reputation or feelings
7 You shall not use the web to commit or permit adultery in your mind
8 You shall not steal another person's content
9 You shall not give false testimony against your fellow-blogger
10 You shall not covet your neighbour's blog ranking. Be content with your own content

I think they need a number 11, Thou shalt write thy posts in bullet points or short paragraphs that thou may be blest and thy blog ranking increase.

      # 3 is solid.  I was convicted early on to allow people to know who I am so that I have to answer for my comments.  It’s called taking personal responsibility for your actions/words.

I’ve always been annoyed with all the pseudonyms in the comments.  I consider it unethical…especially for pastors posting anonymously that just want to flame or say outrageous things.

I don’t buy the “I have to protect myself” argument.  If you have to “protect yourself”, I’m guessing there is something more to the story that needs to be addressed in your life—authority/accountability issues, I’m guessing.  Own your words and feel the weight of potential consequences.

Todd…#10 is a toughie.  How do you not get wrapped up in that?  It seem like the nature of the beast.  You write/post because you want people to read…because you think you have something to say.  If I were a regular blogger, this would be an Achilles heel for me.
