    One Prayer 2009 Dates Announced

    Bookmark and Share

We’ll unite as the Church in action as we share, serve, and give. We’ll be sharing resources, serving our communities, and giving to a meaningful cause.

One Prayer is all about churches working together and we’ve already had several churches offer to contribute ideas, time and resources to making One Prayer 2009 a success. We are also working on some plans that will engage many of you in the creative process for One Prayer. It’s going to be a great year for unity!

Registration and more details will be available after the first of the year, but wanted to get you this basic information so you can incorporate One Prayer into your 2009 calendar. If you have further questions, please contact us.

You can read more here... I know my church participated last year, and it was a great experience!

Bobby Gruenewald has announced the dates for One Prayer for 2009. Mark your calendars now for June 7-28. This year's theme will be "What if we could be the answer to Jesus' prayer (John 17:20-24) for his Church to become one.

    Here's a little more information:

The teaching theme for 2009 is, “God Is...” We’ll be exploring the attributes of God through messages like “God is Powerful,” “God is a Fortress,” “God is My Provider, ” and “God is Love.”

I went through the One Prayer program last year, and I was unimpressed by much of the teaching and messages recorded from church-to-church.  The messages I saw in my church contained bad understanding of Scripture, crammed meaning into verses that wasn’t there, and dodged many poignant questions along the way.  But, here’s my problem with the idea of using John 17:20-24 for this idea:

Do you think a prayer of Jesus would not have been answered by the Father when he asked it?

This prayer was fulfilled with the creation of the Body of Christ in the form of the Church.  It was not an ongoing, “Please, God, maybe you can make it happen…”  When Jesus prayed for something, it was granted to Him.  That was the case with this prayer, too.

And, when He said, “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word,” when we become believers in Christ we do become one in the unseen Church.  It’s an automatic thing, because the Son has asked the Father for it.

Now, if we want to talk about unity and harmony in the Church, there are other good verses in Psalms, Ephesians, and elsewhere.  But with the problems I saw in this program, I hope it either gets much better or that my church passes on it.

CS….our church didn’t do One Prayer last year, but I love the concept. However, the concept doesn’t seem to me to be ABOUT unity directly. Rather, unity is a byproduct of churches and believers joining their hearts together toward a common direction and purpose.

Don’t know if that makes any better sense or not to you. It sounds like your thought or understanding is that OP is set specifically ABOUT unity versus seeing unity as a wonderful byproduct.

CS….by the way, there was at least one prayer in Scripture that Jesus prayed and God did NOT answer. “Father, if this cup could pass from me….” Certainly Jesus’ will was poised toward the Father’s, but the contrast of Jesus’ human AND divine nature (FULLY God AND FULLY man) was no more stark than in this case.

      Just a thought ....
