School District Agrees:  Tucked Shirts Can Be Unbiblical

    Bookmark and Share

More from the Dallas Morning News article:

The school board’s waiver for Neyland raises an important question: Does anyone who cites Scripture get a pass on the dress requirement?

“I feel I am being persecuted for being a Christian,” she told the board before the vote. “There will be a day of reckoning, and you will have to answer to God.”

School board president Jerry Christian supported her request and said the student handbook for parents doesn’t even mention anything about tucking shirts in. Therefore, it’s unclear, he said

“Thank you, Jesus. God is good!” Neyland cried out.

    The whole article is here...

    What do you think?

    What do you think?

OK, well... maybe not... but Dyker Neyland says she fought for her daughter's right to attend her Irving, TX elementary school wearing an untucked shirt because of her religious beliefs as a Christian. The Irving school board agreed with her this week and overturned decisions by the principal and district administrators, who had told Neyland that her daughter must attend school with her shirt tucked in. The mother says her 7-year-old second-grader, has the right to wear her shirttail out because of a Bible verse, 1 Timothy 2:9, which dictates that "women adorn themselves in modest apparel with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing." "I don't want her behind showing," Neyland said. "I don't want her body being exposed."

      Oh Lord….

Dumb - what does this mom let her kid wear when not in school?

I sure don’t want that “other” kid claiming religious freedom when he has a pistol under his untucked shirt.

Some of these rules, silly as they may seem, do have a purpose…

Oh my! Things have certainly changed since my growing up days in the Irving School District. Not sure that’s a good thing.

Looks like her hair is braided in that pic.  Guess you can just choose the part of scripture you like to get what you want huh?

    5. Elbee on Mon, April 27, 2009

Good point, T, about the braided hair and then to say that she doesn’t attend church regularly because she’s a single mom & can’t afford a decent dress - there goes the part of the verse about costly clothing - just a little consistency please!

Yes, folks, this is the face of persecution in American Christianity today.  A tucked-in shirt.

Apparently she feels that tucking in the shirt makes her clothing provocative. I’ve never heard that before. In fact the opposite is usually the case. Having the shirt untuckes is seen as sloppy. Funny though, the school board buckled under the slightest pressure. Hate to work in that district.

I don’t know her heart, but my first instinct is that this is why good people hate Christians.

The argument is flawed in that there are a tremendous number of versus that relate to obeying the rule of authority and submitting to resonable regulations.

If the mother is concerned, she should buy dresses and more appropriately fitting clothes.

Aside from that, the mother has simply shown her child how to manipulate scriptures to get what she wants.  This is a sad basis, as the government is going to be less inclined in the future to care about your religious beliefs.

      this is so sad…seriously?

    10. Ken on Mon, April 27, 2009

The way I read the article, the school board made the decision based on the student handbook, not on scripture.  You have to be careful what you read into this article.  Their policy said nothing about tucking or untucking shirts so they really didn’t have anything to stand on when confronted with this issue.

    11. PastorCliff on Mon, April 27, 2009

If this girl is wearing appropriate clothing, then it should not matter if the shirt is tucked or not.

My question is this, What is it that is exposed if the shirt is tucked in? Perhaps the t-shirt is not the real issue here.

A young lady should be dressed modestly. If her shirt has to be out to cover herself up, then mom and daughter both have other unresolved issues.

    12. Eric Frisch on Mon, April 27, 2009

I agree with most of what’s been said… in the end, this is a pretty silly issue.  Having said that, am I the only one who thought it was funny that the school board president’s name is “Jerry Christian”?

      ...it’s Christian vs. the Christians!

    13. Peter Hamm on Mon, April 27, 2009

Ohmygosh… Persecution? Uh… take a look at what’s happening in places like India and Indonesia, please…

American Christians… we need to change our thinking…

    14. Carolyn on Mon, April 27, 2009

I think this is why non-Christians find Christianity hilarious.
