Schuller Son Officially Resigns

Juan Carlos Ortiz, the founder of Crystal Cathedral’s Hispanic Ministry, will serve as interim senior pastor. He and Executive Pastor Jim Poit will lead the pastoral staff. A number of pastors will speak on Sunday mornings.

The church expects to have a new pastor in as soon as six months, or as long as 15 months.

According to the OC Register, the Rev. Robert A. Schuller stepped down as senior pastor of Crystal Cathedral, a month after he was removed from the church's weekly syndicated television broadcast, the church announced.

In a press release on Crystal Cathedral's Web site, church officials said they had accepted Schuller's resignation. Schuller, 54, is the son of Crystal Cathedral's founder, the Rev. Robert H. Schuller.

"Robert continues to be a valued and long-standing member of the Classis of the Reformed Church in America," the announcement said. "It is expected that Robert will make an announcement soon regarding plans for his new ministry. The leadership and congregation wishes him all the best as his plans unfold."

When MMI posted the orginal story, many of us said he would resign shortly. The rift was there, the pain was there. I just hope the family rift won’t stay.

I still want to know if his resignation was because he rejected the false teachings of his father or not. Oh, well. We’ll learn it in Heaven one day, I’m sure.

Undoubtedly, Robert A. was preaching a message that was either hitting too close to home for the “board” (preaching the Truth) or the loyal supporters were getting more (the Truth) than what they were really willing to pay for. I say, “God bless, you Robert A. You’re doing the rght thing!” It will be interesting to watch what happens with the “The Hour of Sour” in the future!

Robert’s a good guy. I’ve known him and Donna for years and I think it’s just really difficult following in someone else’s shoes, especially when it’s Dad’s. I wish him the best. Very tough call when it’s private, let alone so public.

God bless him…..and God will! It was so exciting to see the gospel preached in its fulness by Robert, Jr. It “felt like” revival coming to Crystal Cathedral to hear the truth of the redemption story as rarely seen from that pulupit. It was a joy to see the Cathedral ministry begin to turn towards the whole truth—not just the prosperity and “feel good” truth of the gospel.

I am sorrowful for the Cathedral, as they are rejecting the whole gospel and the “lighthouse” is being removed. While the desire to be a “mission” rather than a “church” is one that is being set forth by the church board—the fact is “the mission” is the redemption message of our Lord and Savior—so in focusing on a “mission” that does not include Christ’s redemptive mission—we fall short!

The good news for Robert, Jr., is that God always rewards those who diligently serve him, and make the “main thing” the “main thing.”

Good for him! Recently, someone wrote into Parade magazine that comes in the Sunday newspaper asking about Jr. Tells you how the church ranks when people write in to a magazine in which readers generally ask questions about their favorite movie star or singer.

Arrgghh! i get so frustrated by you people who just wanna talk about negatively about other ministries and how bad they are. I know some people pretty closely involved there, and just for the record, I don’t believe it has anything to do with preaching the fullness of the Gospel or anything like that.

Those in church leadership must know that often time there are LOTS of other factors that go into these sorts of rifts than doctrine. Leadership skills and abilities, vision as to how to carry out an agreed upon mission and theology, or sometimes simple personality differences.

Please stop making it about what it isn’t. The fact is that it is a bummer either way. I believe both parties love, follow, and proclaim Jesus and hope the best for all parties involved.
