Seven Possible Ways to Develop Your Church’s Vision

    Bookmark and Share

I wouldn’t mind hearing some of your comments here as well!  Here they are…

    1. Forget vision—just minister.
Pastor does not work with a vision for the future but “takes it as it comes” responding a week at a time waiting to “see what happens.” Vision is overrated.

    2. Keep on Keeping on.
On arrival the new pastor finds out what the pre-existing vision of the church was before arrival and goes with that.

    3. All swim.
Pastor gathers the entire church to develop a vision statement.

    4. Board dreams & casts.
Pastor meets with the board developing a vision, then they cast it to the whole church.

    5. Pastoral staff dream & cast.
Pastor meets with pastoral staff developing the vision then together they cast it to the board and church.

    6. Moses-on-the-mountain.
Pastor “goes up the mountain” and seeks the vision, then returns to cast it to board and members.

    7. Denomination’s choice.
Pastor and church adopts the District Superintendent’s vision (and denomination’s) for the church.

FOR DISCUSSION:  Honestly… which ones of these have you tried?  How did they work?  And how are you now determining the vision of your church?

Professor Kevin Drury has an interesting discussion going on over at his blog. He is in the middle of teaching a class on church leadership, and he is teaching his students about the different ways that some pastors develop vision for their churches. Take a look at his list, and give some comments on each over at his blog to help him out.

Our staff developed a mission statement that was a combination of 3 and 5. Since it was meant to define our staff, only the staff was involved, but all the staff was involved. We met one time to brainstorm our values, then allowed it to marinate for several weeks, then did a one-day offsite to firm it up.

Our Senior Pastor has decided to recast our congregation’s vision in 2007. He is leaning toward’s an “all swim” but I am challenging him to do a “Board Dreams and Cast.” We have a healthy give and take. I know he listens to me and I fully trust him to make a wise decision after gaining all the input of stakeholders.

4 and 5 work to me. Most of the others don’t. 1, 2 are horrible, 7 is pretty bad in many circumstances (but maybe not all), and 3 is organizational suicide. 6 is hardly the picture of members ministering together.

I think 5 and 6 both have their place. I think for most churches, they need a strong leader to set the vision and direction. But that leader also has to be able to gather a team that refines it and works together to accomplish it.

The danger of 6 is a dictatorship. But if done right, can be very beneficial. That person must be good at hammering out the details with the rest of the leadership team.

As a former IWU grad, you should know it’s Keith Drury (not Kevin).  It’s even on that page at the bottom… no biggie, though.  http://www.mondaymorninginsight.com/images/smileys/smile.gif

I attend a wonderful church here in Tennessee where I live. We have a young pastor and he his continually challenging us to do more and be more in not only the church itself, but the world over. There is always something fun, inspiring, and good for others going on at our church. I truly believe we have a pastor who does his best to walk closely with God everyday. He even shares all of his daily struggles with us from the pulpit. He does not mind telling it like it is, but he is always encouraging. I wish all churches had a pastor as inspiring as ours!

This is great information that I’m sure leaders of a church will find useful. A good book to read is “So you don’t want to go to church anymore” by Jake Colsen. Colsen is a fictitious character and the book is told in his perspective. He encounters many trials about anger and other personal issues as well as keeping people in his church. Great book!
