Ten Books You Should Check Out Today

Here’s the list that Warren Bird has put together… it’s pretty good!

    Thanks Warren!

The typical pastor spends an average of four hours a week reading, outside of sermon preparation, according to a recent survey. How do you compare?  Here is a sampling of current titles that Leadership Network’s directors are reading to round out your library. The topics range from leadership to culture to devotional. Most but not all are religious in topic. They make for good reading not just on the beach or vacation, but anytime…

I guess I read maybe 8-10 hours a week outside of sermon prep. I read through Warren Bird’s list and I have only read Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell. I am interested in some of the books on the list, especially those that have more of a theological bent.

I guess I have OD’d on books that are “how to.” There is nothing wrong with your how-to-lead-the-local-church books, but I find that most of the them say the same thing. I have also found books about engaging culture to be a waste of time for me. If you want to engage culture, then quit reading a book about it and get out there in culture! I had a guy who recently joined our church ask me if I watched the GOD channel. I told him that I don’t really watch any Christian television (I do TIVO Ed Young…that is it…). I followed that with, “I get more ‘revelation’ watchin’ VH1 than TBN.” He gave me a puzzled look.

RIght now I am reading Chesterton’s biography of St. Francis who wasn’t a Sissy and Ken Kinghorn’s Christ Came to Make You Fully Human. I find theological books and historical books feed me more than the latest church fad books.
