Why Go Multi-Site?

1) Our society is going larger and smaller simultaneously, blending the strength that size offers with the comfort and convenience of smaller, closer venues. The church can have programs that large churches have while keeping a smaller feel.
2) Staff with generalists. A church plant normally starts with one planter who does it all. In a multi-site church you can start with existing staff in place. Instead you add specialists such as technical arts, administrator, or director of creative arts for children. The big win is that now all locations have the benefit of all the staff.
3) Less cost AND greater impact. Community Christian started the 2nd campus with less money on staff, equipment and marketing. It cost less money to start and reached more people, and resulted in greater retention.
The bottom line is this: Churches are using the multi-site model to reach more people for Christ.

As many of you know, I am very interested in the multi-site church movement. It has really picked up a lot of steam over the past couple of years, not just with existing churches, but also with church plants. Now some church plants are adapting a multi-site strategy early on. My church (Seacoast Church) did a traditional church plant 100 miles away in 1998. In four years it grew to 130 people. In 2002 we converted that church plant to a campus and it has grown to 350 and birthed another campus in the same city which has grown to over 400 in less than 2 years. Multi-Site combines the resources of a mega-church with the community feel of a neighborhood church and turbo charges church planting.

Thanks for starting off the conversation. From all I’ve read and heard, Seacoast is doing GREAT things! (You’re one of the churches on my list to visit!). I’ll be at the two multi-site conferences later this year… love to meet you!

How large does a mother church have to be to be effective with multiple-sites? Our church is currently running about 525 between two services. We are considering adding a video cafe on-site and two off-site venues (10 miles east and 10 miles west). We currently only have 3 pastors on staff and realize a strong pastoral presence is necessary at all venues so that worshippers feel a part of the larger ministry. Any advice?
