Would Your Church Utilize a Church Secret Shopper

    Bookmark and Share

Our good friend Greg Atkinson is offering a new 'secret shopper' service for churches. Essentially, he will come to your church and take a look at everything from your church’s parking lot, lobby, nursery, facilities, signage, restrooms, overall feel and a main focus on the worship experience including music, technology/media and preaching.

Hopefully, all of our church's are consistently getting feedback from visitors and new comers. But have you ever used a professional to do this type of thing? And if not, would you consider such a service? What do you think?

For more information on Greg’s new service, you can read more here...

      Todd,

I believe this was highlighted a few years ago in a book called, “The Five Star Church: Helping Your Church Provide the Highest Level of Service to God and His People” , which I read when I was interning for the pastorate.

We all think we’re “friendly” and “effective” but these “secret shoppers” can really tell the church if they are living in their own alternate reality.

I would utilize one in a heartbeat.  Visitors don’t always give good, honest feedback for fear of being seen as critical.  Plus, any one visitor may not hit all the areas that a professional shopper would.

I love the concept of getting an outside perspective.  However, I’m more interested in what an unchurched person thinks about my church, especially the Sunday morning experience.   A couple of years ago I had the staff of the church I worked at read “Jim and Casper Go To Church”.  I also invited unchurched friends to secretly visit our church and complete a survey I had created to gain an outside perspective.  I even offered the participants $50 for their time.  When we discussed the book I then revealed the secret worshipper results and we had a very robust discussion about what was working well and what we needed to change.

I’ve thought about doing this more than once.  The Offthemap.org guys have a great survey, and they suggest giving $25 to people to come to a service and give their feedback on the survey form.
