Small Church Innovation

Large churches aren't the only ones that innovate (but we probably hear more about them just because they are large). In this section, you'll find some success stories on how smaller churches are making a real impact in their communities. Read about others or share your story in our forum!

imageWhat are the Top Church Innovations in the Last 25 years?

I need your help... I'm compiling a list of the top church innovations over the past 25 years, and want to be sure I don't miss anything. It could be something as simple as the introduction of the video projector in church services, or one-use communion cups. Or it might be the video venue or the introduction of the start of internet campuses. I'm trying to put together an exhaustive list. Could you take a few moments to rack your brain... then that come to your heads (some of you might find this exercise fun, and can come up with a longer list... that'd be great). Of course, I'll be sure to compile the list and publish it here at MMI in the near future.

imageSmall Town Big Church

On Sundays you’re lucky to find a spot to park at the confluence of Rohnerville Road and Highway 36. Dozens of cars line the edges of highway and road, and a hundred or so more cram into the big dirt parking lot of the white, old-fashioned church on the southwest corner of the intersection. Which is odd, given that this is Hydesville — pop. 790, according to the sign on the way into town. The 2000 Census was more generous, giving Hydesville 1,200 residents. But still, it’s a small town. Sleepy. And yet that pretty, white, steepled building — Hydesville Community Church — is busting at the seams, with a congregation of nearly 600...

Small Churches:  The Disadvantages

Michael Hines has an interesting post on the advantages and disadvantages of small churches on his blog (The Discipler).  Since I’m often accused (by a very small group of people) to be pro-mega-church and anti-small church; (which I’m not, by the way); I thought this would be a great discussion topic here.  Today, we’ll look at what Michael says are some real disadvantages of small churches.  Yesterday, we looked at some of the advantages...  Michael writes…

When You’re Not Saddleback and You’re Up Willow Creek!

Here’s an interesting new website (thanks to Kurt Staeuble for the ‘heads-up’:  The Mayberry-Driven Church It’s by a ‘couple of guys names named Dennis and Randy’ who are ministering in small churches in the great northwest.  The website actually has a PODcast (audio feed) that’s really interesting.  These are two guys from Southern California with a lot of larger church experience who have transplanted to rural Oregon to pastor in a small church setting.  Their first PODcast caught my attention because of it’s great title.

When Loving You Is Killing Me: Thoughts On Pastoring The Small Church (Part 2)

Yesterday, we looked at part one of Pastor David Hansen’s story.  Today we’ll hear (as Paul Harvey would say), ‘the rest of the story’.  David writes…

When Loving You Is Killing Me: Thoughts On Pastoring The Small Church

Are you a small church pastor that struggles with both the best and the worst the small church has to offer?  I recently found the heart-felt story of Pastor David Hansen, and his experience with his first small church pastorate.  I think it echos stories I’ve heard many times over the years… and stories that I’ve witnessed first-hand many times as well.  Here’s part one of David’s story…

Why do pastors leave the ministry? Several common issues emerge from the research of Dean Hoge and Jacqueline Wenger: preference for another form of ministry, the need to care for children or family, conflict in the congregation, conflict with denominational leaders, burnout or discouragement, sexual misconduct, and divorce or marital problems. Of these factors, which form the basis for the central chapters of Pastors in Transition, two are especially important: conflict and a preference for specialized ministry. A close third is the experience of burnout, discouragement, stress and overwork. As the authors explore these factors, they provide significant insights into what can be done to help people stay in ministry. imageEat This Book: A Conversation in the Art of Spiritual Reading
