A Simple Plan for Leadership

A couple weeks ago, I attended the Externally Focused Church Conference at North Coast Church in San Diego. During the first session, Pastor Larry Osborne shared a few comments on leadership that I found really helpful. I liked the way that he was able to make things clear and concise. When speaking on leadership, Larry said that there are really two main things you need to do as you lead a church or a ministry (or really… anything). They are...

1.  Determine your purpose.
2.  Determine how you will measure success.

I know it seems pretty simplistic, but think about it for a second.  How many of our frustrations in our own leadership hinge on getting one of these two things wrong.

Maybe we’ve been doing a certain ministry or aspect of our church the same way for a long time and we’re seeing no results.  Do we know our purpose?  Are we measuring our success?  Amazingly… many times we aren’t doing either.

Some will say that only God gives the increase and we just need to be faithful.  In truth, God DOES give the increase; but he also entrusts us to do the best job that we can.  To do that, I think it’s imperative that we stay on course by determining our purpose; and continually strive to do even better Kingdom work (that’s measuring our success).  That is something, I think, that brings a smile to God’s face.

So… how are you doing in this basic area of leadership in your church?  What is the purpose of your ministry?  And how are you measuring your success?

How you answer these questions today will determine the direction, results, and Kingdom impact your church will have in your community tomorrow.

Hello! Glad to see that others in our nation are interested in and care for the leaders of our church.  I pray that God uses you and your passion for his purpose.  I also wanted to make you aware of the National Pastors convention in San Diego, CA that is taking place in February.  It is a week packed with speakers, entertainers, and praising our Lord by engaging with others in ministry! You can check us out at NPC.com.
