A coalition of Toronto churches says it will sponsor a Chinese Muslim who is slated for release from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Anwar Hassan is in a unique situation because the United States has ruled he isn't an enemy combatant but he says he fears he will be persecuted if he returns to his native country.
The churches from the United Church of Canada have applied to sponsor Hassan as a refugee and support him for at least a year...
