Catalyst:  Reggie McNeal on the Biggest Transformation in Christianity

Here at Catalyst, and heard Reggie McNeal speak for the first time today. I've enjoyed getting to see Reggie up close and personal at a couple of our Leadership Network meetings, but this was the first time today. He was really great... Today he spoke on the biggest transformation going on now in Christianity: the rise and explosion of the missional church. Here are some of my notes that I took... Hopefully they'll make sense some. I would really encourage you to pick up one of Reggie's books. If I find that anyone else that posts some great notes from Reggie's session, I'll post a link to it here... Here's what I wrote down:

Tens of thousands of new Christians each day in China
Tens of thousands of people coming to Christ each month in India

These people are saying:  “We don’t have time to evangelize… we’re growing too quickly.  smile

“I’d like to see Pentecost happen where I live, not just ‘over there’”

What is God doing over there that we could learn from?

It’s too early to ‘define’ this movement…

How do we ride the wave?

Internal focus in churches produces church centric view of the world.
External focus in churches produces a kingdom lense view of the world.

The missional church doesn’t see the church as a silo (come and get it).  The missional church looks more at the ‘go and get them’.  God is at work in every area, the missional church looks at how to work in those areas.

The church counts those who are in attendance.  God is too busy counting those who aren’t there.

Regular church ‘shrinkwraps’ God’s ability to work.

“Quit reaching lost people.  They don’t want to be reached.  They want to be left alone.”

Jesus is hanging out with the lost.  (He has come to seek and to save that which was lost).

We should make people adopt their culture or their lifestyle to accept Christ.

Are people gonna have to become church people to accept the gospel?

We are in a God intoxicated culture.

God is ‘busting this sucker wide open’

The book of acts is the church catching up with the spirit.  That’s where we are.

What’s the point of the people of God if the people of God isn’t the point.

The church is not the destination.  The KINGDOM is the destination.

The church is just a connector to the kingdom.

Well… those are my notes… Reggie had some great quotes.  Hopefully some of those came through from my notes.  smile

Some great thoughts...some of which would make far more sense in context!  But I’ve appreciated what I’ve heard from Reggie over the years.  Thanks for sharing your notes; they point us both toward some “problems” and toward some “solutions”.  The details are in our hands....

I have recently started helping a new church plant as their worship leader, and we are really discussing what kind of church we want to be; and missional is a word I toss out there a lot. I had the privilege of attending Catalyst; and even before that, God has been impressing me that we must get out there and touch lives in the name of Jesus. Stop with the creative catch phrases, the excessive “Rock Show “ atmosphere that costs a pretty penny; and lets get our hands and feet dirty touching the lives of the “undesirables”. In our city the majority of our people are middle income and lower, so spinning our wheels trying to attract a money base to build great buildings is not what we want to be about. Being able to help lower income families with necessities or raising money for a people group to get clean water. We need to learn to be a going people, not a “y’all come” kind of people.
