Ed Young, Jr. on “Church Pirates”

Orginally published on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 4:22 AM
by Todd Rhoades

Ed Young, Jr. recently recorded this at a staff meeting at Fellowship Church in Dallas. What is a 'church pirate'? It is a person who serves on a church staff who suddenly decides to leave the church and start a new church 'plant' in the same city. Sounds like Ed may have been burned on this one a time or two. Take a look and let me know what you think.

For your response:  Have you ever had a church pirate on your staff?  Have you ever been a church pirate?  Let me know your thoughts on this subject!

I showed my wife this video clip.  She wanted to gag.

I listened again to the video.  “If you are really that big and bad, then go start your own.”

What?  Why is it that this man thinks he has a corner on God and that no one else can hear from God to do His work?  I think there are so many wounded sheep that if they can find a group who will nurture and encourage them back into the fold, why would another pastor care?  After all the shepherd doesn’t produce the sheep, sheep produce sheep and if they are sick and wounded, they don’t usually produce well?  I suggest, “Lift up Jesus and leave the results of what others are doing to Him.”

In reviewing it again without knowing this man’s ministry or work, it almost sounds like he is sowing the very discord he says he is against????

  • So, Eddy says that he has seen this happen in two situations recently where guys who have been there a long time, then make their move down the road.  I found it interesting that a new church plant was coming to Atlanta just down the road from North Pointe.  The church is with Louie Gig and Tomlin, so is this one he is talking about and if not should it be?  I would be very interested to hear Gig give Eddy his two cents on “his church pirating thoughts”.  Furthermore, Ed, come on bro, who are you?  What church plants have you been a part of other than the one that you have “planted”.  What are you doing to see the kingdom become successful through the birthing of other communities?  Do you truly think that these buildings your buying and putting your label on are “church plants”?  WAKE UP BRO!  I would also be interested to read the articles that were written from the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Dallas when he found out about you wanting to “plant” another one of your buildings and video screens right next to his church.  HMMM.... Sounds pretty familiar, maybe you’re the church pirate my friend.  Also, interesting how you allow all of the positive comments on your blog about this deal but anyone who comes against your line of thinking you do not want to hear form.  At the end of your video you should have said “if you agree with me I will hear from you” rather than if you have gone through it I will hear from you.  Furthermore, on that note, do you think only those who have gone through this have godly wisdom?  The reality is God might use someone who hasn’t gone through this to help you see how narrow minded and back biting you sound.  Why don’t you get off your high horse and begin helping and raising up some church planters rather than use your supped up video screen to spew dissent and hatred towards people who may truly be trying to follow God.  By the way, who gave you the proverbial license to dictate what someone can or cannot do?  You think because you have a tremendous amount of resources and some cool ideas that makes you God’s gift to “church planting”, come on bro, you are something that was nothing and God used you to minister to people.  Now you choose to sound like the obligatory master of what is right and wrong.  Brother, focus on yourself before you start trying to throw your measly stones at others.  I pray God does not hold you to the standard you obviously hold others to!

    @ Jimmy regarding the “Situation”

    Bingo.  You get the prize.

  • Thanks Rick, how is the church coming?  How is Keller?  I miss that place and the Village.

WOW!  Does this pompous jerk not even know what Church Planting is???  How does anyone grow to be a church planter, if they don’t have a home church to nurture them first.  He is just bitter.  Stupid.  You could take hundreds of people from his church and no one would notice because it is so big and impersonal.

And being called to the elite.  Give me a break..  Rich people don’t need Jesus?  What a complete hypocrite!  Where does he think his church is?  It definitely is not in the ghetto of all ghettos.  It is located near one of the most elite suburbs in DFW: South Lake/Colleyville, not to mention Coppell and Grapevine???

I don’t see him planting a church in Oak Cliff, where people must need Jesus the most.

Also, FYI, church planting is not opening muliple venues and putting your face up on a video screen for people to worship!  Hmm...sound familiar??

Church Planters, plant where God calls you!@

    Shocking!

Let me caution those of us who would call names.  This is still our brother in Christ.  Ed has not sinned some terrible sin and thus needs to be shunned or slandered.  He IMO poorly spoke some words that we hear out of any context of relationship.  I suggest we not call our family a pompous jerk, hypocrite or any other name.

    We can disagree without that.

This is exactly what happened at my church about a year ago.  There was a church split and during all the turmoil, the pastor said from the pulpit for people not to ask where he was going if it came to his leaving.  He wasn’t interested (so he said) in taking people with him.  Then when it came down to him leaving, what did he do?  He starts a church practically in our backyard (not literally, of course) and many of the members followed!  Although I felt it was him time to go, I really questioned his integrity after this happened.

I do agree that I should not have used names.  I am sorry to Ed for that.  I still hold to my post as passionately as I did when writing it though.

Ok, Ok, enough already, I am sorry that Ed made this staff meeting public gee can’t anyone say anything anymore without 129 people getting bent out of shape and chewing on each other, turn it up people, ok so Ed does all of everything because he wants all the salary for working so hard he does not want to share the income with the rest, he wants the private jet to himself so he can go on vacation with his family like he did last March when he went to Seattle, so he wants all the royalties from the books so that in 15 years or so he can have the Ed Young Jnr dinisty, so what he is in charge, he said he would come to South Africa and then cancelled at the last minute, but that’s ok he is Capt Bligh of the Bounty , you Americans have created this kind of leader so suck it up and live with it untill God shows up and changes it. The church of Christ keeps on coming

  • The man uses a staff meeting as a vehicle for airing his personal views to the world.

Let’s just all stop and think about that for a miinute, shall we?

It is bothersome that the comments on Ed’s blog are so tightly moderated.  I tried ot post but of course it was shot down.  Better to have no comments than only filter through the ones you like.

I poked a bit more around his blog and felt like I was discovering what it would be like if Matthew McConeghy (sp?) became a Christian.  Ed in the gym.  Ed makes coffee. Ed. Ed. Ed. ED. ED. ED.
