Four Great Questions on Leadership

Orginally published on Wednesday, July 02, 2008 at 7:49 AM

Perry Noble writes that he is asking himself four questions that are really stretching him as a leader. These are great questions, and humbling questions. Great leaders need to take time to ask these questions. They will keep you on-track, and keep you from becoming a pompous jerk of a leader, (who just happens to have a growing church). Here are the four questions:

1. What do I need to stop doing?

2. Do I always have to be right?

3. Am I helping people around me succeed?

4. Am I speaking positively of other people?

You can read Perry’s post, and read his other thoughts about these questions here.

Thanks, Perry, for asking the tough questions of yourself, and challenging us to do the same.

What questions have you been asking yourself lately?

I don’t really want to ask myself these questions, but I think I will anyway.  Thanks for the tough assignment.

This is all well in good in the pursuit of pragmatism.

The role of “leader” in the Church has borrowed much more from the corperate world than from the Bible. The body is obviously not functioning well because of the amount of weight and importance placed on the pastors and staffs of churches, who, I must say have willingly embraced the POWER that this unbalance has brought.

The #1 Question for a leader, and by that I am assuming that we are talking about PASTORS and ELDERS is....

Am I rightly dividing the Word of God?

And that didn’t even make the list.

As far as “speaking positively” What about SPEAKING TRUTH. This reminds me of the INVASION of pop-psychology on child rearing. Positive afirmations. That my friends is the way of the World. The Truth HURTS. The MAN of GOD speaks TRUTH which is totally foreign to the flesh, but nothing “grows” the church and promotes it’s leaders better than the flesh.

  • Jud is correct, but so is Perry.  You need to ask the spiritual as well as the secular, questions. Of course both are the same.\\

The problems in churches is where the membership leaders has a power problem.  They want to be separate from the leadership of the church.  They do not want to work together they want to work alone. Doesn’t work well.

    Okay,

It was questions for leaders, Jud. Not pastor/preacher/theologians. Not all leaders in the church are preachers, and all should be in the Word daily and following it. Anybody who is preaching should be striving to correctly teach God’s Word. I’ll grant you that.

    But…

I would contend that the questions we ask ourselves as leaders should go back to our purpose that God has for us. We are to make disciples (as part of the church), and we are to do that by and alongside equipping people for the acts of service God prepared for us beforehand (as equippers). In that vein, I think those four questions are EXCELLENT ones.

I struggle with Number 1 the most.

Judd, did you read Perry’s post on his blog?

He started off with “Here are four questions that I wrote down last Friday that the Lord is using to stretch me…” and finished with “Those are just a few things the Lord is using to stretch me!”

He didn’t say this was a list of the top 4 questions he’s asking himself.  He didn’t say these are the only questions he’s asking himself.  By your comments you seem to assume that Perry is not asking himself any other questions.

Todd asked, “What questions have you been asking yourself lately?” So I assume from your comments you’re asking yourself “Am I rightly dividing the Word of God?” which is a question we all should ask ourselves. And you’re also right that we should ask ourselves “Am I speaking truth”.  In addition to other questions like the ones Perry’s been asking himself.

Can we safely assume you’re NOT asking yourself #4 (Am I speaking positively of other people?) since you don’t seem to speak positively of anything that I’ve seen?
