Free Chapter of Mark Driscoll’s Latest Book:  Death by Love

Orginally published on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 5:20 AM
by Todd Rhoades

Mark has a new book out. Here's the description: Death by Love is a unique book on the cross of Jesus Christ. While many books debate the finer points of the doctrine of the atonement, what is often lost are the real-life implications of Jesus’ death on the cross for those who have sinned and have been sinned against. Written in the form of pastoral letters, Death by Love outlines the twelve primary effects of Jesus’ death on the cross and connects each to the life of a different individual.

And now you can download a free chapter...

So, after you’ve read it… let me know what you think…

I took the time to read through the sample chapter, and one word sprung to my mind: WOW.  If this first chapter is any indication, Driscoll has written a great book that gives real inspiration, encouragement, and assurance through the pronouncement of our faith.

As I read through this opening chapter and compared it to Batterson’s “Wild Goose Chase” from earlier this week, several things stood out to me:

-Abundant scriptural use.  There were specific verses, quotations, and references to narratives from all over the Bible crammed into this first chapter.  In Batterson’s book, not so much.

-Scripture used in context.  As Driscoll wrote to help comfort his friend, I saw perhaps only one instance where the interpolation and verses he used were slightly off.  All of the rest of it took verses, applied them correctly, and used proper hermeneutics.  I already discussed how the Rich Young Ruler interpretation that Batterson used was incorrect, and the only one he chose to use.

-True self-help.  Rather than exploring things in a pseudo-psychological sense with using the Bible as a framework, Driscoll was using the most effective tool ever in helping a person who may be depressed, sanguine, or morose: The Gospel of Jesus Christ.  He took his friend’s horrible history, explained things through a Biblical lens, and made sense of all of the problems without having to delve into pop psychology.

I will definitely read this book when I complete the others that are waiting in my queue at home.

CS, I’m shocked.  Shocked I say, that you would endorse a book by someone listed on the “Master List of Heretics” by the Christian Research Service. (http://www.christianresearchservice.com/masterlist1.htm )

I happen to think Mark Driscoll is a great teacher, aggravating at times, controversial much of the time, but a great teacher.  I would recommend this book, as well as other books by Driscoll and books by many of the authors on the above list, but I’m shocked you would.  grin

Hey!  I wish I had known that there was a “Master List of Heretics” a long time ago!  That would have saved me so many hours in putting together my own!

    =)

Seriously, though, when I have heard Driscoll in YouTube clips and the like, and after reading this sample, I like what he has to say more than I dislike his faults.  Don’t get me wrong, the profanity and the “Jesus is having sex with me,” comments (Song of Solomon critique) still have to go.  But the man used proper hermeneutics here.
