Granger Announces Three New Campus Locations (and their delivery system plans)

This past week, Pastor Mark Beeson announced the locations of three new Granger Community Church campuses that will open later this fall. All are within close driving distance of the Granger, IN main campus; and all will be 100% video. Tim Stevens told a little more on his "Leading Smart" blog about what these new Granger campuses will look like...

According to Tim, their plan is…

Scalable.
We can have 1, 2, 6 or even 10 theaters in the same complex having a service simultaneously for NO additional cost.
Workable because we are meeting in movie theaters. Everything about a movie theater tells you to watch what is happening on the screen, yet expect an experience that is moving, maybe funny or emotional, perhaps thought-provoking.

Untested.
We don’t know of one church in the world that is doing this (away from their main campus, not just a video overflow) as a permanent solution. I’d love to hear from you if you are doing this.

Exciting.
Mostly because it is untested, it gets the heart beating fast!

Proven.
We spoke with North Point Community Church. They offered this solution (100% video) for several weeks during a transition of facilities, and they said it worked great. They said, “It is a myth that people will not worship to a service on video.”

Low-Risk.
We are investing in rent and leadership. Not a lot of equipment.
Timely. I don’t think this could have been considered two or three years ago. We are just now at a place where the necessary high-quality video capture and delivery equipment is falling in price and cost-effective for a church to consider.

The Trend.
Just in the past few months, we have seen live events being sent to movie theaters. The Miley Cyrus concert was re-played in theaters to sold-out crowds. The U2 concert is playing now in theaters. The Metropolitan Opera even transmits its performances to crowds in movie theaters.

Sounds like a great plan.  The only part that worries me is the video worship part… that’s hard to pull off.  Wonder if that is the long-term plan, or if they are hoping to add live worship to each location as the sites grow?

    Todd,

I don’t think it is all that hard to pull off the video worship.  I’ve taken part in several experiences with the LIfeChurch.tv internet campus and had a wonderful worship time.  The only thing is that when it is you and your wife sitting in front of the laptop, you do feel a little dorky singing.  In a theater you would hopefully have more than one or two people...so the dorky feeling should be gone.  If you haven’t had a chance, I’d recommend checking out one of LIfeChurch.tv’s internet services..they have a ton now, even one in the middle of the night. ha.

Todd - our plan for 100% video is not temporary, we are planning on doing this for the long-haul. I became convinced this could work after talking to the guys at North Point about their trial run.

Of course, our model includes a mid-week service where our extended worship experience happens. This will continue to be “live” at the Granger campus for the time being.

Thanks for the clarification Tim… I know if any one can make it work, you guys can!  Thanks for stepping out on faith to do the good work!

I’ve heard and seen a lot about video services, but I question how people can get connected. Are you planning on having pastors at those theaters, invitation to something to give human interaction at all?

Yes, each site will have a campus pastor .There will be community time built around each service that will allow relationships to build and connections to happen.

I find it interesting that while Granger is busy coming up with new locations to reach more and more people with their ministry, the rest of us are busy coming up with ideas in our head why a video service won’t work to connect with people. It kind of shows us where we are in the stream of things: Some are investing our 10 talents with great trust in the Lord and earthly risk while the rest of us are burying our one talent and “playing it safe.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m just as guilty of this as the next guy.

But isn’t it interesting that we’ve laid claim on “our” church and not left it in the Lord’s hands as his stewards, rather than the owners?
