“I Was Robbed at LifeChurch.tv”

Orginally published on Thursday, March 08, 2007 at 6:00 AM
by Todd Rhoades

You've seen all the billboards across the country with little messages from God, right? Well, now Satan has entered the advertising world (as if he didn't have a hold on it before) with a new series of billboards protesting LifeChurch.tv. One reads, "I was robbed at LifeChurch.tv"...

It’s a very interesting concept… all the billboards promote LifeChurch.tv’s new series and website at SatanHatesLife.com.  Go there and take a look at the billboards and their campaign.

What do you think?

It is an interesting concept. Personally? I do not care for it. Like you said, “as if he didn’t have a hold on it before.” Oh, and the little dude in red tights better known as Satan....... he is more funny looking than anything else.

I’m normally a HUGE fan of Lifechurch.tv. Not on this one. :(

    Sorry.

    I LOVE it!

It’s fairly clever.  Give LifeChurch props for doing something different, but I’m not sure it will be effective. I think it will generate lot of heat among church folks. Just like the PureSex series at Granger, it will get big buzz from churches and church marketers all over the country.  PureSex was also successful in driving people in the door to sample.

I’m not this campaign will drive anyone who isn’t already a “church person” through the door (or into cyberspace to check out the Internet campus). The question to ask is this: Will it be effective with the unchurched, the nominally, or previously churched, and with a post-modern culture that’s pretty gimick savy.

My guess is not so much.

I beleive that story is more effective than gimmick.  Check out http://www.wannaknowwhy.com for an example of the same use of billboards to drive people to a website.  This one uses story, and I think it’s more effective.

We’ll know soon enough though.  I’m hoping that Craig and Bobby and Terry will share the results with the rest of us.

    I like it.

This is a church getting that we wrestle not with flesh and blood and people hang in the balance.
This is a church taking a risk to say to people we are going to approach this battle differently.
This is a church that is embracing creative approaches for people who expect less of the church.
This is a church keeping the investment side of their budget and ministry high when that is usually the first thing that goes.  Most churches quit reaching people after 8-10 years.
This is a church dedicated to leading people in the church to reach out (this causes more spiritual maturity than anything I know) and inviting people to experience a side of God that most unchurched don’t believe exists.  I have more reasons but that all I have time for right now

Leonard… I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said.  I hope you’re not seeing comments on this campaign as critical of LifeChurch. LifeChurch gets it. the issue is whether this campaign be effective with those people who are hanging in the balance.

I’m just not sure it will be particularly effective with post-moderns who aren’t interested in church, and who see spirituality through a lens of relativism.  I think it may come off as hokey or gimmicky and be dismissed.  No one from LifeChurch has talked about the purpose and target of the campaign, yet.  It would be interesting to have them comment.

Like I said.  Time will tell.

    Kirk,
Thanks for the input.  I actually agree with most of what you said as well.  I don’t actually know if I am accurate on this but I really think that the impact of stuff like this in short is measurable but minimal. I think the accumulative impact is greater in perception of the church and stuff like that.  Sort of like a sermon.  It’s impact can only be measured over time because sermons today do so much more than convey information, they set atmosphere.  A campaign like this is really as much or more about atmosphere and perception than information.

Others have said it pretty well… I would add that I’m a little loose with marketing in this regard.

Anything that is inoffensive and cute and funny that gets people who might not step into a church to come, and really hear the Gospel of Christ, is good in my book. I find it inoffensive, cute, and funny. If it’s effective? I don’t know… Lifechurch seems to think so.

Whether people like it or dislike it, it’s working. Look at the discussion this has spurred. If you don’t like this I challenge you to ask yourself honestly, Why Not? What about this is misrepresenting the heart of God? I bet a ton of people come to Christ through this which is all that matters. I can’t wait to hear how this has affected peoples lives after it’s over. I appreciate the heart of Craig Groeschel and his staff for being willing to do what ever it takes to reach the lost. Keep up the good work for God Life Church.

Leonard… you make a very, very good point.  Take a look at the PureSex series that Granger did last year.  It really pushed attendance.  They maintained the numbers after the series ended.

That, in the end, is the measure of success.  Does anyone come through the door… and do they stick.

I think it’s brilliant! I mean, spark the interest, especially of all the pity party people who may hear themselves in the words of Satan, and then hit them with the love and truth of LIFE lived to it’s fullest in Christ.

My first reaction was to laugh. I thought they were kind of funny. If nothing else, it demonstrates to people that Lifechurch has a sense of humor.

Love it!  Very innovative and thought-provoking.  I think it will make non-believers stop and wonder what Lifechurch.tv is all about if Satan hates them so much.  Would that all churches could claim that…

I’ve tried to post several times.  Hopefully this one takes. lol

Thanks for ‘splaining yourself there Peter. Especially the - “I would add that I’m a little loose with marketing in this regard. “

I fall more in-line with Kirk’s thinking on this one. And yours too Leonard with the ‘ception of liking this campaign.

There’s no question in my mind at all that Lifechurch gets it. Remember I said, “personally.”

James: No where would you hear me say(read) that Lifechurch, Craig, or their staff would ever be “misrepresenting the heart of God”.....

Guess thatt means I’m not trendy afterall. lol

Camey you actually quoted me instead of James. I’m sorry if you thought I was responding directly to you when asking how this misrepresents the heart of God. I was actually responding to the general critique of Life Church and Craig. If you read Craigs blog or listen to this series, you will see that there are plenty of people upset at him over this. I was simply asking a general question, and stating my personal view, not attacking you or your quote personally.
I just believe we are loosing a generation of people who will never know Christ and that we must do what ever it takes to reach them.  When its all said and done I think we will see that this reached lost people, and to me, that’s what matters the most.
I believe this from experience. We did a series called Scadalust where we talked about infedelity, pornography and sexual issues in general. We were blasted horribly by the religious in our community. However, at the end of that four week series, 248 people had accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. I believe Life Church will see people accept Christ too through this because of their willingness to do what ever it takes, and live with what ever criticism comes, if it will reach Jesus’ most lost and broken.
Sorry if anything I said offended you Camey.

    John,

No, it is I who must apologize. I did exactly what I get so ticked off at others for doing… looking thru my own lenses instead of kingdom’s. Thanks John for setting me straight. I too know what it is like to be blasted and critiqued by the religious.

Couldn’t agree with you more about “I just believe we are loosing a generation of people who will never know Christ and that we must do what ever it takes to reach them.” This is why I continue to pray for spiritual awakening and revival to come upon us and therefore, OUT of us. I believe it is in some places. I could go on but we’re definitely on the same page - so I’ll refrain.

Thanks again, John. My apologies also to Lifechurch, Craig, and etc.... and to you too James should you be reading.

And John....... Thank you more than any thing for sharing about all the lives that came to Christ! Worth being wrong especially to hear testimony like that!

    Blessings,
    Camey
