Job Satisfaction:  Am I Doing What I Really Love?

Orginally published on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 8:04 AM

Tony Morgan recently published a list that Marcus Buckingham originally came up with on measuring your job satisfaction. This is a great list, and I want to take a posts to actually dig into those one by one...

The third question is this: At work, do you have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?

I’d love to hear your comments… and read Tony’s original post…

You can read all of Tony’s post on this subject here…

1.  Do I know what is expected of me at work?

2.  Do I have the materials and equipment that I need in order to do my work right?

3.  At work, do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?

4.  In the past seven days, have I received recognition or praise for doing good work?

5.  Does my supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about me as a person?

6.  Is there someone at work who encourages my development?

7.  At work, do my opinions seem to count?

8.  Does the mission or purpose of my company make me feel that my job is important?

9.  Are my coworkers committed to doing quality work?

10.  Do I have a best friend at work?

Yes.  But it took me 25 years of ministry, and starting my own church to make it happen.  Prior to that, I spent 80% of my time doing what I wasn’t gifted to do or didn’t enjoy, so I could spend 20% of my time doing what I most loved and was gifted for.

Part of that was due to expectations of established churches; part of it was growing pains, both professionally and in the church.  Part of it required the overall Body of Christ to learn a few things in general.

I’m incredibly blessed today because of it.

I get to be the eyes, ears, hands, feet, and etc of God however it is presented at any moment. Love it!

Of course - my “church” job isn’t just inside a building.

I don’t know about number 10. Sometimes it’s good to have your best friends be outside where you work, so that there is no expectation or connection with the ministry thing.

  • 7.  At work, do my opinions seem to count?

This is one of the most important thing that I look for in a company. I want my voice to be heard. Whether it would help the company or not, I always want to speak my mind out.
