Monday Morning Insight: Seth Godin; Reggie McNeal; Recession; and Don’t Drink the Kool-Aid

Orginally published on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at 11:01 PM
by Todd Rhoades

Today, we have a whole range of stories, including some great leadership resources this week: an audio interview with Seth Godin; another one with Reggie McNeal; along with two online web meetings featuring Rick McKinley, Mark Driscoll, John Bishop, and Dave Browning. Plus, you'll find out why Bishop Thomas Week's says that he's not guilty after he pleaded guilty. I'll also share an interesting press release and we'll talk a little bit about the possible recession we might find ourselves in...

Thomas Weeks Now Says His Guilty Plea Was to Protect Wife Juanita Bynum
Bishop Thomas W. Weeks now says he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault to protect his evangelist wife, victim Juanita Bynum, from scrutiny.  Weeks said not only was his freedom at stake but so was the reputation of his wife.  The couple has reportedly weathered some stormy days during their five-year marriage. Each has accused the other of abuse.  Weeks says Bynum sent him a text message after he met her at divorce proceedings Monday urging him not to go forward with the criminal trial. Weeks released a copy of the text message he said Bynum sent to the media.  In it Bynum expressed her love for Weeks and asked him to protect them from going through the criminal case. “Plz (sic) don’t let this go to trial,” Bynum allegedly wrote.  “After receiving this text, I wanted to bring closure [to the trial] so that [Bynum] wouldn’t feel that I was trying to make this just a public matter to publicize a whole lot of negative things that would have come out,” Weeks said.  SOURCE

Seth Godin Interview Exclusive at Catalyst
My friends at Catalyst landed a big interview with Seth Godin.  Seth is a mega-guru blogger and best-selling author; and I know many of you follow him religiously.  Well, you need to listen to this interview… Seth talks about his creative process, his thoughts on the church, and some other really good insights on marketing and ideas. What Should Congregations Do in Time of Recession?
Tom Ehrich, a church consultant and Episcopal priest offers this advice:  “First, let’s say the word: “recession.” That means worsening unemployment, sagging consumer confidence, cutbacks in capital spending, paralysis in debt markets, unsold houses, declining economic activity, corporate and personal bankruptcies, and tough decisions at home.  Second, let’s accept that recession is a spiritual and pastoral crisis. Those who bought the “prosperity gospel” have some theological rethinking to do. Young capitalists who have known good times will struggle existentially when clicks and cliques don’t pay the rent. Families built on “shopping together” will have only each other, plus a stack of bills to triage. Cult-like devotion to the housing market will yield scant hope or meaning. People need real bread.” SOURCE

New Book:  Don’t Drink the Kool-Aid:  Oprah, Obama and the Occult
I’ve mentioned before that I love press releases… especially ‘Christian’ ones.  This one caught my eye:  “A new book released this month explains it all Don’t Drink The Kool-Aid: Oprah, Obama and the Occult. A compilation and critique of numerous quotes from newspapers, magazines, TV and internet, dealing with an issue that is a hot topic right now and will continue to be for quite sometime. Powerful people and a powerful argument that what we see goes much deeper than the surface. This book is a thorough investigation to enlighten and disseminate the information that when pieced together form a clear pattern of influence.  My thought:  I hope the book is a lot more interesting and easier to understand than the press release.  SOURCE

    Dear Bynum,
it was saddening to have gotten such an information on your marriage. i like you vry much and have taken to listening and watching your messages. however, I doant think divorce is a solution in any marriage. there are always ups and downs and I thiank you and Bishop can resolve this yourselves. i advice that you both come together again and seek spirituial reddress, afterall there is nothing impossible for God. pls seek God, you both.
