Paula White’s Return:  Last Ditch Effort or Steadying Force?

The Tampa Bay newspaper yesterday did a long article on the return of Paula White to Without Walls Church. You may remember Paula and her ex-husband, Randy, built a huge megachurch outside Tampa. But recently, Randy stepped down and announced he was giving the reins to his ex-wife. This past weekend was Paula's first weekend back.

Paula returns to a ministry that has lost stature and supporters after the breakup of the couple's marriage two years ago. Without Walls has endured a dwindling congregation, threat of foreclosure and a U.S. Senate inquiry into the ministry's tax-exempt status.

What has not changed is the message: God wants believers to be healthy and wealthy, and they can get there by giving generously to the church. The more congregants give, the more they will receive.

Critics see Paula's return as a last-ditch effort to fill church coffers before millions in loans come due next year. But others see her as a calm and steadying force and the church's best chance for a revival. They look forward to a renewed focus on God's word.

Religious experts and those who follow charismatic and Pentecostal preachers see Paula’s return as a necessity for her and the church.

Without Walls stumbled in the absence of Paula, whose ministry increasingly took her away from Tampa long before she and Randy divorced.

Randy, who struggled with the death of his 30-year-old daughter from his first marriage, often left preaching duties to associate pastors or guest ministers. He talked openly about wanting to move to Malibu, Calif. Sometimes congregants were surprised when Randy’s sermons included anecdotes about going to bars, cavorting with bikers and hanging out with former strippers.

Barbara Burgos, a small-business owner from South Tampa, left Without Walls almost a year ago because of Randy’s “obsession with talking about strippers and porn.”

“I don’t go to church to hear about sex, sex and more sex,” she said. “After he preached that every woman needs a pole in the bedroom to keep her husband happy, I knew it was time to go.”

The Whites did not respond to several requests for an interview sent via the church’s public relations firm.

Paula takes on a ministry with mounting financial problems. The Evangelical Christian Credit Union in California initiated foreclosure proceedings in November, triggering repayment of nearly $27 million in unpaid loans. The church has until next July to repay the largest loan, an $11.2 million mortgage on the Tampa church.

So… what do you think about Paula’s return?  Last Ditch Effort or Steadying Force?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Is her boyfriend, Rick Hawkins coming with her? Yea, the guy she was seeing while married to Randy and is still with.

Having heard her “sermons” and watched her antics, there will always be a group drawn in by the spectacle of charismatic speakers. Once again, though, it comes down to preaching/teaching the Word of God, not man’s or woman’s words, as the truth. What I have heard her say in speaking to groups was not found in the Bible. Let’s hope and pray that she will go to the Word of God to share with people. As for her ex-husband’s propensity for the vulgar, that growing movement needs to be short-lived. The people of God are called to live above or separate from those sorts of things. There definitely is no place in the pulpit (speaking for God) with that kind of language (or the kind Jeremiah Wright used). That is not holy; it is holey.

How about another full dose of heresy?

I admit, I did have to laugh at this:

““I don’t go to church to hear about sex, sex and more sex,” she said. “After he preached that every woman needs a pole in the bedroom to keep her husband happy, I knew it was time to go.” “

So it came down to talks about sex, the kind that many popular churches have been doing recently, to drive someone away from an apostate church.  Wow.

I listened to a Paula White “sermon” on Youtube after reading this article… and laughed the entire time. Not a single thing she says is even remotely biblical or Christian. How can these Charismatics not understand that they are being taught, essentially, paganism? Southern Evangelicals are so removed from basic Christian teachings it is unrecognizable to most scholars. Which leads me to my next question. What kind of education is needed to teach Scripture? Shouldn’t people have a basic idea about 1st Century Jewish life to understand the context of the Gospel? Just asking…

    Pathetic…

Not all charismatics are “blab it grab it” wack jobs…

    Just sayin…

Thanks Peter. I get tired of being put in the same category as these nut jobs. I am a Spirit Filled Itinerant Minister; I preach in small rural areas these guys only fly over and never will go to. I travel to developing nations and travel to remote areas that you have to be going to to get to...I do believe the gifts of the Spirit are still for today, but this stuff makes me want to be a Baptist again...No wonder people think we are crazy and stupid…

I am concerned that we have some obvious discrimination going on here against pole dancing...what goes on in Vegas....excuse me, the bedroom, should stay danceable in the bedroom.  Plus, “spiritual materialis”, haven’t you gotten the note on this that it’s now okay?

That wasn’t unusual. In the past year, as her own ministry has evolved, Paula White’s appearances at the North Grady Avenue church have become sporadic.

Paula you are really very courageous. Great effort. Well done.

Such a shame.....and a destructive witness of what true Christianity is all about.  Thank the Lord there are many strong, consistent-living, Christ-like, gospel focused ministries in the Tampa area.  We all pray that the unreached will be found by those ... and not stumble onto this tragic situation ---- by the way, maybe this church should have walls, and locked doors.....from the inside..

Very nice and interesting article. I enjoyed it very much. thanks for sharing your experience with all of us.

Livebingo, are you serious? Courageous? Honestly, if going back to a million dollar ministry is “courageous”, either you haven’t been anywhere, or you’ve never given to the poor. Keep watching those perfect people on TNT, or some other form of Christian television that presents paganism dressed up as something to do with a poor Jewish carpenter and itinerant Rabbi who also happened to be God’s son. Wonder how Jesus would’ve liked those throne seats and mansions for people like Paula White? Oh yes, she’s so courageous.

3 words for churches like that and those on the other end of the spectrum- better off dead

what’s wrong, NY wasn’t what she expected? LOL… (She thought she could come over here in the Tri-State area and preach those empty promises… NY was a big wake up call to her...) This is a last effort to save face and save the church from going belly ups… God is exposing false preachers little by little… I see why many are converting to Islam…
