Rick Warren, Tickling & Kissing, James Dobson, and Obama

Here are just a few short, but interesting (at least I think so) tidbits from around the church world...

You heard it here second. Ingrid is predicting that Rick Warren will be offerend a 'highly significant position within the [Barak Obama] administration, possibly cabinet level.' I guess we'll wait and see. She also predicted a couple years ago that we would have the equivalent of pagan temple prostitutes in our evangelical churches. She's getting to be a regular Pat Robertson. Just kidding, Ingrid. I don't think Rick would ever take a cabinet position (and I really doubt one would ever be offered). And if it was, maybe he should go for it. What do you think?

Oh, but wait... there's more...

On another note… the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has issued a detailed list of inappropriate behaviors for priests, saying they should not kiss, tickle or wrestle children.  The newest version of the archdiocese’s Decree on Child Protection also prohibits bear hugs, lap-sitting and piggyback rides. Acceptable behavior:  priests may still shake children’s hands, pat them on the back and give high-fives. Hmmm…

And finally… James Dobson will be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame.  He beat out Dr. Laura, Bob Costas, and Howard Stern in the balloting this year.  I guess I’d feel better about this if I hadn’t gotten an email from Dr. Dobson’s Focus on the Family asking me to put my support behind James because of what a great testimony this would be.  Not sure why… but that didn’t sit real well with me.  I have a tendency to not like press releases like that.  Is it just me?

OK… enough of my thoughts for the day…

What’s on your mind this fine day?

Todd

Why do we have to be dogging other Christians, can’t we just get along?

    Todd,

I agree with you.  I like Dobson, and some of the stuff he’s produced over the years has been extremely beneficial to my family and me.

However, the “stuff the ballot box” campaign e-mail I got didn’t sit well with me, either.

I’m glad he got in the Hall of Fame, though.

    FYI Todd, it’s Barack (with a ‘c’).

The list of ‘appropriate’ behaviors is sad. It’s a move away from discernment and towards legalism made necessary by a lawsuit-phobic culture. It’s perfectly conceivable to me that in some contexts a high-five could be creepy and inappropriate, and that in others a kiss could be totally uncreepy and perfectly appropriate.
Bummer for rules that don’t allow for discernment… hmmm
(not saying they’re a bad thing, just that it’s sad that that’s how far we’ve sunk)

    My two cents,
    -Daniel-

I can’t imagine Warren taking a cabinet position either, but I think if one were offered, he should seriously consider it.

Todd, as an English major, I would like to point out that the title to this post emphasizes the importance of the comma.  Just imagine it without the commas.........Yep.

    Okay, resume your regularly-scheduled discussions.

Nora, you just made my day.  Without commas that title is sooooo funny.  But which one is Rick W. kissing and which one is he tickling?

    Thanks for the laugh,
    Bart

    Hey Nora,

Bet there’s some that will read it that way regardless of commas.  Just more wood to pile around the Rick Warren stake.

  • I was torn regarding the Dobson “ballot box”. Here are the questions I asked myself and others when we discussed it:
Did you know there was a broadcasters hall of fame?
Did you know the members were elected by public ballot?
Did you know that Dobson was nominated?
Can you name any of the other nominees?
Before you vote, are you willing to check out the other nominees to see if you would rather vote for them instead?
If you were nominated, would you want your friends, supporters, and listeners to vote for you?

Once I thought through that, I couldn’t help but place my vote.

I have to wonder: Did Dr. Laura and Stern recruit votes? Dr. Laura isn’t on in my market anymore and I haven’t listened to Stern in years.

Bart:  “Thanks for the laugh.” You’re welcome!  I’m here all week! :0)

Dave Z:  “Bet there’s some that will read it that way regardless of commas.  Just more wood to pile around the Rick Warren stake.” So true, Dave, but if Rick Warren reads this site, as he is rumored to, maybe he will get a little chuckle out of it! :0)

If the jealousy bug gets people upset over Warren, so be it.  He already said he wouldn’t endorse a candidate, but Dobson has....  It makes me squirm a bit when “pied pipers” try to lead people towards anyone but Jesus?  I don’t see Warren’s bridge building to be trouble.  Very good.  Christians have wisdom, minds, hearts, and the ability to pray for discernment.

    Call me crazy.....

Dobson thing makes me uneasy as well.

sounds like “Go see the Passion of Christ to break records to prove Christianity is a power in the marketplace… “ rather than for life-change type of experience....  grin
