Slapdown:  Mark Driscoll vs. Deepak Chopra on the Existence of Satan

Orginally published on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 7:39 AM

Set your Tivo or stay up late tomorrow night. Friday, March 20 is the day that Mars Hill Church in Seattle will host ABC's NightLine program and when Mark Driscoll will debate author and spiritual guru Deepak Chopra on whether or not Satan exists.

Also arguing against the existence of Satan will be Bishop Carlton Pearson. Tag teaming with Driscoll will be Annie Lobert, the founder of "Hookers for Jesus".

Should be an interesting exchange...

You can read more here...

Do you think these type of debates are worthwhile?

Is this a smart move by Driscoll?

Who do you think will win?

Todd

Well, I could see how Chopra himself could be possessed by demons with all of his anti-Christ writings and such, so it should be interesting just to see him squirm.

I think it could be a fun viewing adventure… As far as who could win, I think that in most cases everyone feels that the person they are pulling for ‘wins’.  I see it as a way to bring more clarity to both sides of the argument and that’s a good thing.  I think that showing the secular world that the Christian world is open to discussing issues in a civilized manner is a great message… In my experience much of my church up-bringing had a shut-up-and-knod mindset that didn’t exactly encourage and foster a spirit of ‘truth’; it just fostered a spirit that could be summed up by saying ‘we don’t know why we beileve, we just believe’…

    Ugh.

Wonder what Driscoll will be wearing.
A sparkly “Hookers for Jesus” t-shirt maybe?

I like the idea of civilized debate.  I have witnessed Dr. William Lane Craig debate and I have watched the debate between Dr. Gary Habermas and Antony Flew.  These intelligent and well researched debates bring a lot of the Gospel to people who would not normally come to listen to just a Christian speaker.

That being said I am a little concerned about this situation.  I’m sorry but I don’t think Mark Driscoll has the apologetic, theological, or philosophical training to make this informative, objective or effective.  Will it draw some good ratings - possibly.  Will the Christians “win” the debate - well I’m not hopeful about it.  You can be sure that Deepak Chopra has done a wealth of scholarly research.  And I’m sorry but I’m not real sure what the organization Hookers for Jesus can bring to the table other than personal testimony.  It would be better if he hosted and brought someone in who is an expert in debating in these types of forums.

No Satanists on the panel.  That would make things interesting..  wink

I think this is a good move by Driscoll.  He is incredibly sharp on his feet, and will do just fine… I think the majority of Christian America agrees with his position, so it will not be difficult to get a sizable portion of the audience to sympathize with his position

I believe that the biggest problem the Christian community has with Driscoll is that they haven’t listened to or seen him, except for a controversial clip here and there....  If this introduces them to him - Good deal.  The non-controversial 97% of his teaching is dead on and as sharp as a razor.

I tuned into nightline last night but Mark Driscoll wasn’t anywhere in sight.

    What gives?

At ABC’s web page it is Thursday night the 26th.  Gives us more time to pray.
