The Buzz:  Andy Stanley; Making Guests Welcome; 10 Stupid Things; and A Mad Church Disease Epidemic

Orginally published on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 8:55 AM
by Todd Rhoades

Running low on time this morning... got lots to do... so here's the latest buzz. These are things that I think you'll want to check out today...

These are listed, as always, over at ToddRhoades.com in the left hand news feed. Some people love the new site; others loathe it (because it is flash oriented)... but the deal is... the newest links will always be listed there first... so check that out. Does it cause you to change your routine and go to another site (yes... an actual site, not an RSS reader)... but hopefully you'll indulge me and do it anyway. (smile). Somebody called the new site the "Drudge Report" of ministry sites... I can handle that... as long as you go there as often as I check out Drudge each day! Anyway... I'm rambling at this point. Here's the links:

Hmmm… All the links go to toddrhoades.com is this on accident?

I don’t mind the flash, but I do wish there was a mobile version.

The links seem to be messed up on this page.

One of the reasons Drudge is so successful is the page is so simple.  This all flash site is anything but, and I’m sad to say but I really do ignore all links to it.  Everytime I decide to try again because something sounds interesting, it turns out I can’t find it anyway and I’m not willing to pay the time penalty to try and figure out the site (much less allowing the flash to load).

You’re kiling me with the redirect links.  I don’t wanna quit you, but please....

I hardly ever comment...sorry to make one of my few comments negative.

I read MMI every day via a newsreader. I clicked over to your other site the first time you did it, and that’ll probably be the last. A few reasons:

    1. I read all the blogs that I follow on a newsreader in my iPhone. Your new site not work on it because of flash

    2. It seems a bit silly to have to go through 2 clicks to follow a news story. Not sure why you’d do it this way except to try and build traffic for your new site...but why? It doesn’t seem to offer much different than this site

    3. One of the benefits if reading blogs is convenience ( with RSS readers - see it all in one place). It’s just become inconvenient to follow news stories on MMI

Just my personal experience and opinion, for what it’s worth

    Ack!

Your new site is awful.  A site should NEVER… EVER… EVER… be Flash based.

Use flash sparingly.  It isn’t good for the blind, it isn’t good for slower connection speeds, it sucks for people like me that disable flash by default.

If post like this are the future, then MMI is in my past.

I have not been able to read one of the links provided yet.  Since so much is there it is kind of frustrating.

Seems that I’m tickin’ people off, and it’s tickin’ me off.  smile

Sorry that some of you don’t like the new site.  It was something I had fun putting together over Christmas.

    (It’s free, by the way)

Sorry some of you don’t like flash.

Sorry some of you will go away an never come back.  (I’ve gotten several emails and comments to that effect).  It’s been nice having you.

Sorry I asked you to go to an actual website rather than exclusively using an RSS feed or Google Reader.

Sorry that you had to click twice to see a link, or that your slow connection or old computer wouldn’t load the site.

I really wasn’t trying to tick you off.  Really.

I was trying to offer more in less time.  The new news feed literally takes me seconds to add links and offer more really good and interesting stuff.  In short… it was convenient for me.

But not evidently for you all.  And that’s fine.

I’ll find a work around… in the mean time, it means that there will be less stuff here.

I’m glad we all don’t leave churches as quick as we threaten to leave blogs.

    Todd,
I’m not trying to “pile on” with the complaints, but I’m just a little confused.  I clicked on one of the links, which took me to your new site, then found that link again and clicked on it, which took me back to this post.  I’m not sure what’s going on, but I can’t get to the actual article…

Also, perhaps you could explain a little bit more about why you are creating a new site.  Are you planning on doing away with MMI and transitioning completely to the new one?

Hope you’re “enjoying” the snow as much as I am here in Northwest Ohio! wink

    Thanks, Nora,

Bottom line… I wanted an easy, seamless way to add links that I come across.  I tossed over a thousand really good links last year that I found that I just didn’t have time to blog about.

So… when I picked up the ToddRhoades.com domain last year after some ballet dancer dude named Todd Rhoades let it expire, I thought this would be a good place to post them, given that I didn’t want to make MMI too much more complicated.

But… I started playing around with this sprout (flash) maker, and thought… man, this is cool.  I can pull in all kinds of stuff here… it’s all dynamic, slick, cool, and I don’t know of any other website that is compiling all this information.

What I thought was gonna be simply got bloated.

And say what you want about the new site, it brings together a tremendous amount of great stuff from around the web, whether it be twitter, rss feeds, video, etc.  It’s almost totally dynamic, which means that I really don’t do anything to keep it updated.  Which seemed like a dream come true.

And to be totally balanced… I’ve probably received as many emails from people saying the LOVE it as I have saying they HATE it… but there is a large enough group that can’t seem to make it work, or are not willing to give it a continued try.

It’s not my intent to shut down or divert MMI… but to manage my time better.  Doesn’t look like that’s gonna be possible without a complete MMI re-design (which is something I was trying to avoid).

    Anyway… that’s the scoop.

My only complaint is that you’re missing a hyphen today.

I thought that “how to make a church guest friendly” meant that we’re going to find a novel way to deal with the curmudgeon guest.

What a surprise when the article was about making a church “guest-friendly”.

I’d give you my two cents’ opinion on using flash-based website, but since you aren’t asking me for money as you slave away to create the website in the first place, I’ll just humbly say thanks for your work.

If I’m interested enough in something you’ve posted, I’ll figure out how to get there.

Now, if you’d just find something about dealing with that curmudgeon visitor.

Hey guys, go easy on my pal Todd Rhoades re: his new website. He’s trying something new and different. He’s asking for feedback not an a**-kickin’. I love the new site but if you don’t—just like cable tv—you can always change the channel, as some of you have made it clear you have done.

  • Posted by Todd Rhoades

    Thanks, Linda.  smile

    Todd,
You have a very loyal readership… I’m sure several of your readers have mad web skills that would be more than willing to help you mock up new designs and get things together for you.

And it wasn’t meant to be piling on or harsh, but a purely flash based website is flawed from every aspect.

The beauty of DrudeReport is its simplicity.  What would make the drudge report even better?  An official, and accurate RSS feed.

  • Posted by Carl Thomas

Clearly you are a bad person for using flash and forcing an extra click.

  • Posted by Step

Please don’t take comments out of context.  At least in my case, there was no harshness, hatred, or even anger behind my post - just a desire to offer sincere feedback.  I really did Hope it would Help.

I’m not sorry to say I find the current setup unusable.  I will certainly gladly go away if the answer is, as some have posited, “suck it up and leave if you can’t live with it or don’t like it”.  It’s definitely Todd’s site, he can do what he wants.

I will say that criticism is a part of life, but sadly it’s not one many of us are well-versed in.  We don’t generally know how to take it well, and we take far too many things to heart.  I’m preaching to myself here as well.

So there you go.  Brief again, I really don’t have time for this but do care and so I shared.  HTH.

Nora’s first question was never answered and it remains for many. How do you get to the story? the links just bounced back and forth btw this page and the new toddrhoades.com. Links appear dead-ends. they work under the “news” section. Some help here.

  • Posted by Todd Rhoades

    STEP…

No problem.  I can take criticism.  I was just amazed today when people started emailing me kinda demanding that I change things or they’d leave and never come back or ragging on the whole thing.  There are better ways to get positive change.  smile Not saying you’re one of them.

As for the link problem, chadsee… I’m afraid I’m not getting that on this end.  The links in the left column at the new site totally work here.

Part of the dealeo is that this was built with beta software.  I tried to mention that as much as I could.  I hope the most of you will be able to view the links, and I’ll look for another easy way to display them using non-flash; but until then, unfortunately, I think we’re kinda stuck.

    Thanks,

    Todd

Ok, I complained, but complained nicely to you on twitter, which I think I am going to enjoy!

I like the information “overload” that you are offering on the tr.com site.

Hang in there. when you put yourself out there you run the risk of getting some of the stuffing kicked out of you!

Hey Todd, it is working now!  Thanks.

  • Posted by Step

Todd, thanks for the response.  Yeah, I certainly wasn’t trying to justify rudeness or demands that you change what you’re doing.  Those types of comments are not worthy of responses in most cases, though sadly common on today’s internet.  (We can still learn from them as long as we avoid taking it personally.)

Reading over my last comment, even though I meant it to be nicer in tone it actually could come across harsher!  I gotta work on that!

Anyway, I hadn’t really picked up on the beta-software stuff until the comments on this post.  Might just be me missing stuff, but that does explain some of it.  I definitely don’t want to discourage anyone from innovating, experimenting, tinkering, improving - so keep at it, and good luck.  I’ll keep checking interesting links now and then to see if situation from my side has improved.  If not - well, I have more than enough to do anyways so I’ll just count it as naturally selecting me out from reading those links.  :D

    Todd;

I agree with several others.  I find the links are circular.
Even when allowing pop ups (which I hate) I cannot get to the article I am looking for from Andy.

Pretty but..... unusable at this point.

i’m sorry if my comment earlier came off harsh as well...definitely wasn’t intended as such.

i know that you’re trying to be helpful with what you’re doing here, and wanted to let you know why it wasn’t helpful from my perspective.

i wasn’t upset or anything by the changes.  just wanted to let you know why they weren’t helpful for me

it’s your blog, and you’re welcome to do with it what you’d like and try whatever you’d like and definitely trying things that make it easier on your end makes a lot of sense.

anyways...again...just my opinion for whatever its worth

For the unaware, the Roheryn server is a “preview server” (not a test server, I’ve been told) for Lord of the Rings Online. It’s the staging ground for the big enhancements they have been introducing into the game since it was launched last April (has it really only been six months?!), and usually it’s not the final version that actually goes into production. As they are getting ready to publish the Book 11 expansion, which includes player housing, the Lotro Gold changes are in Roheryn but no houses were on sale except for a limited period of time yesterday afternoon (1-4 PM EDT). Judging from the turnout at the “Open House” event, considering that it was held during working hours on a working day, a great number of people must have been as excited about the new feature as I was. Here are a couple of pictures to show you what I mean.

I appreciate the work you do to get ministry information out there.  Thank You and as a person just sitting in front of my computer, taking some time off and toodling around, I just take what I can get!
Whatever works for you, works for me, ‘cause I’m not doing the work.

I enjoyed the Rick Warren article. Thanks!
