The Two Problems Many Churches Face

Orginally published on Wednesday, October 04, 2006 at 6:19 AM
by Todd Rhoades

This is adapted from a post by Seth Godin at his blog. I think it can be very fitting for churches. Seth writes this about the two problems your church might have: The first problem is the problem. The second problem is your inability to admit the problem, talk about the problem and ask for help in solving the problem.

The first problem is that your facility is lousy, you are inwardly focused, your worship is uninspired, you don’t treat your visitors well.

None of those problems are going to go away.

None will go away, that is, if you don’t acknowledge them, clearly and loudly and often. And ask for help.

If you don’t measure the first problem, then you have a second problem.

If you don’t measure the first problem, it’s not going to go away, is it?

First of all I love despair.com. Nice picture. The best is the one titled “Mistakes”. I would have some of them framed in my office but it just doesn’t seem pastoral enough.

Secondly, as usual Grodin is spot on.

Okay… take a look at the posting he has for “Listen to To This”. it is on the money for anyone who preaches. It is the third one down.

Ummm, the link isn’t working for me… and it may be just me, because I really do have peroblems.... I admit it.

And, YES, Kent… I too am addicted to despair.com, but its not my fault.... Gary Mayes made me do it.

How about the third problem… Even if you CAN recognize the problem, AND can talk about it, what about when only half the people in the room will agree that it is a problem because the other half are afraid that they will look stupid (for past decisions) and they don’t want to?

I like it.  Simple, and kinda funny.  Funny, in that it is so simple and lots of truth in it.

Peter, in your example, it’s not really a third problem, but still in the second problem-- the unwillingness to confront the problem as a GROUP.  If the leadership team, and those in power, can’t see the problem, it won’t get addressed, obviously… which is the second problem as initially defined.
