Today, I Call on all Baptist Churches to Officially Change Their Name

Orginally published on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 8:03 AM
by Todd Rhoades

I Twittered about this yesterday, but if your church still has "baptist" in it's public name, this should give you reason to re-think that.

I'm just sayin'... as the press reports stories like this (and the other one today about the Fort Worth church), many people you are trying to reach will associate you with these 'baptists'.

Your thoughts?

Todd

I wouldn’t change a name of a church because of pastors (I use the term with tongue in cheek) like this.  I’d only change the church name if it is a barrier that keeps people out.

I don’t know what’s worse.  The “God hates fags” banner (I think he needs to reread John 3:16) or his sour face that obviously shows no joy of the Lord.  Maybe he just had a bowl of lemons for breakfast.  Who knows?

I also think it’s sad that this man sits in the seat of judgment concerning who is in hell and who isn’t.  I’m not a Baptist.  Never have been, but am in agreement with most of the Baptist theology.  But, I’ve learned that more people will be in Heaven then what someone like this seems to think.  I suppose now if this so-called pastor and defender of the Faith reads this, I’ll be another on his list to eternal Hell.  Thank God for the security of the believer (A common Baptist doctrine) and the saving grave of my Savior.

    Holy Crap, Dude!

It just amazes me how stupid some people can be. I actually wonder if his own message will come to pass on him? He sure doesn’t sound anything like Jesus to me.

I wish ALL the media would just turn this guy and his ‘church’ into one big pile of irrelevance! Just ignore him. I don’t know for sure whether God has hardened Fred’s heart or not, but it sure seems like it. He is the antithesis of what Jesus teaches and is no representative of the God I know and love.

I wouldn’t take ‘Baptist’ out of a church name because of Phelps, but I would make extra sure that any church with Baptist in the title was going out of its way to be the heart, hands and feet of God in the community.

Oh Oh....Eric...you said Holy Crap.  Careful, you may just end up on his list for the next train to eternal hell.

I just wasted 4 minutes and 11 seconds of my life.

I did like the sports coat and T-shirt. Phelps made his first step to becoming a metrosexual. Ha!

I don’t know if Phelps gives Baptists a bad name or not. I doubt it.

    Are you kidding me?

That was one of the most hateful and spiteful things I have ever see. How heartbreaking.

Baaaaarrrrrrfffffffffing noises coming from my house.

This makes me sick, I couldn’t watch any more than a few seconds.  I don’t know if I would change the name of a church over this guy but I certainly wouldn’t name my dog Fred or Phelps.

Have been having this conversation a good amount lately in different circles. If individuals are purposeful in sharing God’s love and kindness in and through their lives - the fact that they are “this denomination” should not be the main focus.

Last week a group of funny looking people went and served others in another city. The fact that they were a part of certain church body was only evident by the vehicles they were in. That’s the type of ministry we should all strive for. It’s not the name of the church that’s important.... It’s who they represent in the moments of life/living. I may sound like a broken record here but a denomination does not save anyone nor should it be our claim to glory.

And no, I did not listen to him for a second. But I did pray for him and those who do.

    LOL Andy,

I hope he doesn’t use King James english on me!!!!!

    Camey,

You didn’t miss anything by not listening to him.  I kind of wish I hadn’t.  I just don’t know how someone can truly experience the love and grace of God that brings us to salvation and then end up so hateful.

    Andy,

I do not understand either. That’s why I believe we need to keep praying for him and those like him.... while we also pray for ourselves.

Hope this finds you doing well as you’ve been missed around here.

Thanks for missing me.  Been extremely busy traveling for our ministry and working with churches.  Also to add to life and it’s complications, my wife has lymphoma.  Please add her to your prayers.  You can read about her and some of her thoughts on the Mayberry site.  She is a real woman of faith.

Mommy, make the bad man stop!

    Andy,

You are welcome. And thank you for allowing me (and any else who read) the privilege of praying for your wife, you, and your son. Talk soon through email and the Mayberry connection.

  • I’m not dropping the “Baptist” from our church’s name just because of this guy.  He does not speak for me.  I just choose to tune him out.

Methinks Rev. Phelps needeth a hug.

He’s provocative because that’s how he and his “church” support themselves.  They provoke people and then sue them when they react.  The have filed and settled literally thousands of lawsuits against cities, companies and individuals for reacting to their provocations.

I don’t know if he really believes the hate he spews or if it’s just become an easy way to “earn” a living.  From what I understand his “church” consists entirely of his immediate and extended family.

For some weird reason I came across this video the day that Tim Russert passed away. Very, very disturbing.

I agree Todd. It’s time for the Baptists to change their name.

An even more disturbing fact? They operate a website entitled ... PriestsRapeBoys.com

Will he go to heaven? Do his works say anything about his faith?

If a Christian can be so full of hate, how can we, with a straight face, claim that it is a better way of life?

I thought the metrosexual bit was quite funny. I was thinking while watching that he makes fun of Arminians and uses words like ‘jackass’. Does that make him part of the Reformed emerging church crowd? Sure sounds hip and relevant to me…
    ...
Seriously though, this is why Catholicism is awesome. Someone goes this far off from Christ’s love, they can get excommunicated.

All I have to say is THANK GOD that my Savior has grace.  Because I guarantee that even this guy that’s on this video, espousing the destruction of others for the trangressions that they have made is something less than perfect.  It would be an interesting day to say the least if the judgment that comes forth from his mouth were suddenly turned against him, allowing him to see through a mirror of the almighty that judgment doesn’t belong in the hands of the imperfect (AKA - every last one of us).

    Daniel,

Glad you saw the humor. I think mocking and sarcasm is a good response to videos like. And yeah you are right he was blasting Armenians and cussing so he may fit into the emerging crowd after all!
