Today’s Buzz: Falwell Quilt; DVD Huge Discount; ORU; Churches Divided; and Wide Stances…

Lots of things to catch up on today... I'm finally getting all caught up from my couple weeks away, and I must admit... it feels good. My favorite story today... Bishop weeks is selling his wedding DVD at a $60 discount now at his website. Better act fast on that one! But there's more (yes, even more) in today's buzz...

A Huge Milestone...
It’s hard to believe, but last week, my wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary of the day that I asked he to ‘go steady’ with me!  We’ve been married for 20 years, but count our relationship back to October 9, a quarter of a century ago.  To celebrate… we did… pretty much… nothing.  But we enjoyed the day, and will do something special in the near future (we’re just not sure what it will be!)

Woman Makes Falwell Quilt… “It was the least I could do.”
Kim Payne didn’t plan on a specific pattern for the quilt she began sewing three and a half years ago as a token of gratitude to Dr. Jerry Falwell, but a heart shape emerged.  The quilt, named “Jerry’s Heart,” was presented to Macel Falwell on Friday at the Carter Glass mansion as construction continued on the nearby burial garden containing Dr. Falwell’s grave.  “It was the least that I could do. I was in awe of a man of his stature taking the time to say hello,” Payne said. “As much power and influence as Dr. Falwell had, he cared about everyone … he truly had a heart for people and he mirrored the heart of God so well.” Source.

A Sampling of Churches Divided...
The LA Times recently listed how many denominations are handling homosexuals these days.  How do the Roman Catholic Church, Episcopal Church, PCUSA, United Methodists, ELCA, UCC, and Reformed, Orthodox and Conservative Judaism deal with a Biblical interpretation of homosexuality?  Read here to find out; all in one helpful article.

Bishop Weeks Deeply Discounts his Wedding DVD
No lie!  (I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried).  According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Less than two months after his arrest on a wife-beating charge, Bishop Thomas W. Weeks III is offering a steep discount on DVDs of his million-dollar wedding to televangelist Juanita Bynum and a book they wrote together.  Describing his “Last Call Sale” offer, Weeks tells visitors to his Web site, “Make sure that you get it right now because plenty of people are going to ask for it immediately. Get it while it lasts.” It was not clear how long the “Last Call Sale” has been going on Weeks’ site. The wedding DVD, book and a T-shirt are now available online for $10, advertised as a $60 discount.  Source.

Where’s Ray Comfort When You Need Him?
Change for a million?  That’s what a man was seeking Saturday when he handed a $1 million bill to a cashier at a Pittsburgh supermarket. But when the Giant Eagle employee refused and a manager confiscated the bogus bill, the man flew into a rage.  The man slammed an electronic funds-transfer machine into the counter and reached for a scanner gun.  Police arrested the man, who was not carrying identification and has refused to give his name to authorities. Since 1969, the $100 bill is the largest note in circulation.  Police believe the $1 million note seized at the supermarket may have originated at a Dallas-based ministry. Last year, the ministry distributed thousands of religious pamphlets with a picture of President Grover Cleveland on a $1 million bill. See a related story here.

ORU:  “If there’s something that needs to be fixed, let’s fix it.”
Chairman George Pearsons, co-pastor of Eagle Mountain International Church in Newark, Texas, said regents have approved an independent investigation into allegations made against the university last week in a lawsuit. The outside group that will perform the investigation has not been formed, Pearsons said.  More here.

“Wide Stance” Gains Notoriety
Among the most famous excuses ever given for questionable behavior, “I have a wide stance” must fall somewhere between the schoolchild’s favorite “the dog ate my homework” and President Clinton’s “I didn’t inhale.” But Sen. Larry Craig ‘s contention - made just after his arrest in a restroom sex sting - has permeated the public consciousness, showing up as more than just the punch line to late-night talk show jokes. The online Urban Dictionary defines “wide stance” as a euphemism for a closeted homosexual. David Kurtz of the blog “Talking Points Memo” called Craig’s wide stance claim “The Best Legal Defense of 2007.” And Beau Jarvis, who writes about wine, travel and food on the blog “Basic Juice,” notes that the phrase has become less than innocent and proposes “cleansing” it by using it to describe a well-balanced wine. More here. (I know that had nothing to do with Church Leadership, but I thought you might like to know anyway).  smile

Have a great week!

Todd

Juanita has a better deal, though.  You can get the DVD and a gold plate for her threshing floor room for the low, low price of just $19.95.  That’s quite a deal for a life time of intercessory prayer!!!

Thanks for including “a sampling of churches divided.” A great book that speaks to this is “No Perfect People Allowed” - it changed my warped mindset to a mindset that sees them the way Jesus would.

Yes, I hold in my hand a 1 MILLION dollar bill.  I wish it were real.  It says right on it “This certificate of wealth is not a representation or facsimile of any past or present U.S. financial obligation.” It also says, “Copyright Michael Rothe” and “To order call Toll-free 800-something or other” The number appears to no longer be in service.  And yes I seem to recall that this was part of some promotion from something called the “Spiritual Law of Attraction prosperity manifesting circle” or something like that claiming that all you had to do to claim the fortune God wants you to have is call the toll-free number and order their program or book or something.

Hard to believe someone would actually try to pass one of these.  Actually it’s not that hard to believe.
