Today’s Buzz:  Benny & Pat; Buffoonery; Save a Million Dollars; and a Bruce Wilkinson Siting!

Orginally published on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 6:08 AM

Benny Hinn, Pat Robertson, and Jonathan Falwell all in the same room together talking world peace. Oh, to be a fly on the wall! Also in today's buzz: you can save $1 million by NOT watching TV; I'm encouraged because someone named MMI as one of their top blog reads; but calls one of their other top five blog writers a 'freaking stud'; and MMI comes out with a list of our own...

So Benny Hinn, Pat Robertson, and Jonathan Falwell Walk Into a Bar...
Sounds like the beginning of a good joke.  OK, so it wasn’t a bar… but these three guys held an “historic” meeting in Washington with key ambassadors from Muslim nations, including Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Kuwait, and eight other nations. There are so many things one could say about this, but I’ll refrain!  Link.

I Got Named to Bobby’s Fast Five at MyWorshipRevolution!
Thanks, Bobby, for including me in your top five blogs.  However, I’m listed at number 4 as a “great blog with multiple posts daily.” But at #5 is Steven Furtick, who is described as a “freaking stud.” Am I right to feel a little slighted??!  (Thanks Bobby!)

Save a Million Dollars by NOT Watching TV
Guess what? If you decided to give up TV and invested the money you saved, you would get that $1 million—and probably a lot more. People rarely consider the cost of watching TV, and when they do, they usually focus on the cost of their monthly cable bill. The truth is that there are a wide variety of costs associated directly and indirectly with having a TV. Things like:  the cost of the TV, the entertainment center, cable, pay per view, movies, DVD/DVR, gaming system, games, energy, commercials (the average person spends an extra $6,300 a year due to TV commercials that they wouldn’t have spent if they didn’t watch TV!), and my favorite:  Opportunity costs: Another cost often overlooked when considering the price of watching TV is the opportunities forfeited when you choose viewing over something else. You could start a business, take on a part-time job or take care of your garden so you don’t have to pay someone else to do it. Assuming that your time is worth at least the minimum wage of $5.85 per hour, your opportunity cost is $737 a month if you view the average amount of TV.  No wonder they call it the boob tube.  More here.

Another Day… Another List
It seems everyone has posted this already, but if you haven’t seen it, here it is:  America’s 50 Most Influential Churches.  ChurchRelevance.com has the best detail of this list (if you’re interested).  I’m not real hip on lists like this (I much rather prefer the ‘most multiplying churches’ list from a couple weeks ago) because of a couple reasons:  first, there’s a new list every week, it seems; and 2:  most of the time, the people who make the lists just don’t make sense to me.  Everyone has influence, and everyone should try to increase their influence for the Kingdom.  I don’t see really what good a list of ‘top influencers’ does other than make you feel bad that you didn’t make the list.  They’re interesting to read for me, but that’s about it.  This list didn’t make sense to Ken Silva either, but for a different reason:  relevance.  In this week’s over the top commentary, Ken calls the list ”more buffoonery” and congratulates John MacArthur for not being included on this list, or as he calls it, the ‘relevance parade’.

MMI Releases It’s Top One List of Top Buffoonery Websites
Coming in #1 this year:  This site.

Good Article, Terrible Title
This title will get even the slightest of buffoonery websites going:  Evangelical leader omits talk of fire, brimstone.  You can read the article on Pastor Joel Hunter here. Problem is:  the article talks nothing about fire OR brimstone.  It talks about how many churches are presenting their mesage in a way that’s less divisive and strident; which I think is a good thing.  Read the article and see what you think.  And expect it to be picked up by a myriad of websites saying how the church is going to hell in a handbasket.

There has been a Bruce Wilkinson Siting! You remember Bruce Wilkinson, the “Jabez” guy?  Well, we’ve heard nothing from Bruce since his retirement; but it looks like he’s back working again.  And Whatum has the picture and story here…

That’s it for today… have a great one!

So, I want to know what I can save by reading MMI (or not reading MMI)? Can somebody do a study on that? Huh?

The following 2 paragraphs are from Hunter’s article.

Experts disagree about whether mega-church pastors such as Hunter, T.D. Jakes and Rick Warren are leading their flocks or simply understanding that *****many worshippers now appreciate a more toned-down approach.*****

The Rev. Jim Wallis, of the liberal Sojourners community, said the *****pastors are responding to***** ``dramatic changes in the evangelical world, especially in the younger generation.’’

Sounds to me like a perfect example of 2 TIMOTHY 4:3.

Doesn’t sound like 2 Timothy to me at all.  Not even in the slightest.

Fishon, are you in favor of Fred Phelps approach to the gospel?

He would probably use the same scripture, quite possibly to describe you.

‘toned down’ is infered in this article as ‘theology-lite’… but what they’re really saying is ‘political-light’.  There’s a difference.

    Todd,

Thanks for the shout out back!  To be honest, I didn’t expect you to even know I referenced you.  I’m honored you stopped by.  Just so you know, the fave five are actually in alphabetical order.  So who knows, you could be #1, or you could be #5.  wink

I went ahead and gave you a little extra love in response to your post here.  You’re a stud too bro (I don’t know about the “freaking” yet though).  I love reading your posts regularly.  Keep up the great work!  Maybe one of these days I’ll run into you at a conference or somethin.

HUGE difference between theological lite and political light.

    Have a FANTASTIC week everyone!

    Thanks Todd,

If you don’t like what we’re doing at Christian Research Net we must be right where the Lord wants us.

And you have a great one too.

if disagreement with a site is a sign that we’re pleasing the Lord, then carlton pearson is as unheretical as john macarthur....blessed are we when we are persecuted for righteousness sake and for the gospel’s sake, NOT because of our own perceived rightness’ sake…

P.S.--->and on a random note, may i just take this time, todd, to compliment the nice passwords to post here...i dunno but for some reason, they’ve always intrigued me, lol
