Today’s Buzz:  Hectic Schedules, Suing eHarmony, Ark Almighty, Amputees, and Pastor Against Speed

Today's Buzz includes how to handle your hectic ministry schedule, an update on the new movie "Ark Almighty", a lesbian suing eHarmony, and a really angry pastor against speeding...

How to Balance a Hectic Schedule in Ministry
Rick Warren just released a new podcast on a subject that is near and dear to just about everyone who is reading this (my guess).  It’s on how to balance a busy schedule.  Let’s face it, ministry schedules can be exhausting.  Rick discusses this subject with:  Bil Cornelius is the senior pastor of Bay Area Fellowship in Corpus Christi, TX; Jud Wilhite is the senior pastor of Central Christian Church in Henderson, NV; Brad Powell is the senior pastor of NorthRidge Church in Plymouth, MI.
You can listen to this new podcast here.  What’s the best time-saving thing you do?

Ark Almighty and the Church
On June 22, the movie Evan Almighty opens in theaters across the U.S. It’s the latest movie to be heavily marketed to Christians. In conjunction with the movie a new website has been launched called Ark Almighty, which bills itself as a way to help churches live out Jesus’ call to love one another by facilitating the posting and fulfilling of needs within the church.  The OurChurch blog asks the question… Is this really a generous effort to help others or just a slick movie marketing campaign? What do you think?

Lesbian Suing eHarmony.com
Guess she’s not feeling the love… The woman said she tried to use the eharmony.com site in February to meet a woman, but could not based on her sexual orientation.  So she has filed a lawsuit which claims that, by only offering to find a compatible match for men seeking women or women seeking men, the company was violating state law barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.  More here. (I’m guessing there are enough gay dating websites out there… why all the fuss?)

Why Doesn’t God Heal Amputees?
You believe that God heals, right? When you or a loved one is sick, you pray in such a way that evidences a belief that God, the “Great Physician,” might come to your aid and provide a miracle. Right?  Why, assuming that you have never seen nor heard of an amputee being healed, doesn’t God heal amputees?  And interesting piece over at Parchment and Pen. What do you think?

Don’t Speed Around this Pastor...
Speeding may not be in the Bible. But a Church of Christ minister says traffic laws are God’s laws and must be enforced. Police have received complaints about Alfred Pehl jumping in front of fast cars in his neighborhood, sticking brooms in their way and backing his own car in front of other drivers.  He denies the allegations but was ticketed this week for disorderly conduct. Pehl said people who complain about him and deny they are speeders are sinners. “If we don’t obey the law of the land, then God will hold us accountable. The laws here in this land are His laws, not man’s laws,” the minister said. More here. Don’t even think about Jaywalking around this pastor!

That’s it for today!  Have a great day!

"What’s the best time-saving thing you do?” Say no. If I didn’t I would hardly be at home any during the week. I’d be out of town. Or if I said yes to another - I would be buried in my writing even more so than now. Saying no is really very freeing.....

Todd, I got to see Evan Almighty on Tuesday night at the first public screening. It was awesome! A great message and not the typically cheese you see when the church is targeted by hollywood. This movie has a number of teachable moments but is not preachy. And it is very funny but yet remains clean. You can take your kids, grandma and even a date to this movie - maybe not all together but you get the point. One of the best parts is all the “unspoken” jokes and references - one quick example, Evan’s wife is Joan.

I’m looking forward to the movie, but after checking out the “ArkAlmighty” info and webpage, yes I think it’s just slick marketing.
BTW, another “inside joke” I saw on a trailer...when Evan is freaking out about God being in his back seat, God says something like “Let it out, son...it’s the beginning of wisdom!” Funny.

One of our staff signed us up on this (without asking, as is his manner) and this week we have had a call from another state; seems this out -of-stater’s relative is near us and has some beds to get rid of. We had a family with no furniture. We are hooked up now. I was planning on seeing the movie anyway, and I know it’s primarily a marketing thingie (ARK=Acts of Random Kindness), but our God being Who He is, He just may choose to use a little of this anyway for His glory.

I’m not an amputee, but I did spend a year going to physical therapy every day before being medically retired from the Army and I saw a lot of amputees while I was there.  God may not regrow them new limbs but who says God isn’t healing them when he gives doctors the ability to give them prosthetic limbs?

I remember one guy remarking what a “mean person” a particular female physical therapist was when she being a little hard on a guy who had lost both legs just below the knees and I told him I thought she was an angel because that guy was going to walk out of here. I’m not an amputee but I’ve known a few and they thought of prosthetics as “little miracles” as one of them put it.

eHarmony – I thought they turned her down because they didn’t feel they could find her a match, which they would not have been able to do if they didn’t have other women seeking female relationships in their database.  This just sounds like business integrity, instead of taking the woman’s money and not finding her a match, they told her up front they didn’t feel like they could find her a match and decided not take her money.  They could have just taken her money, let her take the surveys, and reply to her that they did not find anyone who would be a suitable match for her.

Why sue them?  Publicity and/or $$.  I assume that there are plenty of gay dating websites, but I wouldn’t know of course. grin

On the question of healing.... This is one of the mysteries of God that I do not think we are meant to fully understand. Having experienced physical healing for myself.... while I am most thankful.... I would not trade one moment of having been ill. My dad rec’d a completely different sort of healing.... he passed on. I am thankful my dad is gone.

When my dad was in the hospital.... I met a man who was a double amputee. We would go up and down the corridor together talking. While he had lost both legs and had to use a wheelchair, he would not trade having lost them for what he had gained in his relationship with God since. Another man had lost only one leg..... his compassion for the other man was beyond words. It made him thankful to know him and for his physical condition. We had fun racing down the hallway..... Funny… I always seemed to have heels on when they challenged me..... Electric wheelchairs can beat heels…

Nothing can beat the power of God..... Even if we don’t understand all the ways He uses it.

    About God healing amputees…

Bill Johnson, of Bethel Church in Redding, CA is a man of God who I heard share a testimony recently of a child with no legs, no arms, deaf, and mute since birth.  A mother laid the child on the altar and the entire church began to weep and pray.  After an hour or so the child had grown arms and legs, sight and speech had been restored, and she got up and ran to her Mother, whom she had never seen, and asked where her Daddy was.

How can anyone support the claim that the major miracles stopped with the apostles?  He said we are supposed to do even greater things than he did.  The easy thing for us to do is to put off into another generation the things which we have not yet seen and just wait for whenever God decides to do it.

The truth is, if we are Christians, we are responsible for reproducing his lifestyle.  If you’ve never seen an amputee’s arm grow back, don’t reduce God down to your experience.  Raise your experience and your theology to God’s level!

    Wes,

    I need a little more… um… confirmation for that story… Sorry, I have a lot of faith, but…

how can you sue a business for not having a “product” that suits you? That’s the most preposterous thing I’ve heard all week…

i know believers who have served as missionaries in places like south america and africa...from knowing them and seeing their faith in action, they never struck me as easy dupes when it comes to tricks...the miracles they’ve spoken of match what i read on this thread...i admit its hard for me to process but the power of God is as strong elsewhere as it is anywhere else...does God heal everyone?...nope...why?...i have no clue and wont force an answer out of anyone...what i can do is trust God, even when i’m in the dark about why some folks are healed (either by the finger of God or through medical expertise God has gifted men and women with)....

i had a kid in our youth ministry share with me that she had a cyst growing near her heart that was the size of an orange...she asked me to pray...i pray in the name of Jesus that the Holy Spirit would cause the thing to shrink....

she told me that it shrunk so much that the doctors will not have to crack her chest open…

yet i struggle with asthma and a simple common cold to some here can waylay me for a month, lol....God hasnt healed me but God is still God and should be praised no matter what the circumstance…

    sorry for the ramble…

I plan on seeing Evan Almighty, especially if it comes to my small town because tickets are only $3 for new movies. I think it is slick marketing for the church. I don’t think they care whether or not they help the church or not. They want to make money. But i think it is GRRRR-EAT that Hollywood is making movies that have references to God/truth/etc. Always an open door for the church.

On the subject of healing, I have never seen God heal an amputee although I think it is possible. I did visit and pray with an amputee in the hospital once. While visiting with her she went into a bout of extreme pain. I was a young champlain and it was an awesome expereince for me to put Nouwen’s “Living Reminder” in practice. I couldn’t do anything but BE THERE for her. Comfort her and pray.

I think it is good for us to answer the “Why doesn’t God always heal when we pray?” question with the reality of the resurrection. There is coming a time when we wil all have resurrected and glorified bodies. That will be the ULTIMATE healing. Sometimes God chooses to heal now and sometimes he chooses to heal at the resurrection of the dead. This is the mystery.

Not much preaching on the resurrection of the dead these days, especially in Pentecostal/charismatic church that place an emphasis on healing.

AND my number one way to balance my time is to READ MMI EVERYDAY! (No sarcasim Todd...your site does save me time....)

    reGen,

It was during the times when I couldn’t move any thing but my head that God truly spoke more to me about praising Him in the circumstances. When my dad was no longer able to take care of himself..... those same lessons came flooding back as I changed him, bathed him, fed him, and etc. Of course since he was my dad - there were lessons there for him as well as my self and all who were watching. It was a privilege to do those things for him. It was a blessing. In regards to praying..... while I was ill God changed my heart and therefore my prayers changed as well.... I went from demanding to be healed to asking God to use me however He saw fit even if I could never lift a finger, toe or physically feel someone hug me again. I asked all who were praying for me to change how they were praying as well. Does this have any thing to do with me being healed?? I haven’t a clue. Yet, I do know that my dad finally changed his prayers and etc and his ended completely different. I will tell you though that when I think of heaven to this day.... it is thinking of my Lord and Savior that brings a rush over me like words cannot describe. That was something that my dad and I had in common. And of course.... understanding the importance of being His hands and feet each and every day wherever we may be.

Thank you for sharing about your health. I know many here will pray for you. And if you ever need someone to just listen to you...... the same stands. As for the girl you spoke of - thank you for sharing that wonderful news! May His name truly be praised! And thank you for being there for her.

    Now look who’s rambling.....

I plan on seeing Evan Almighty.  I’m a Steve Carrel fan and either the director of this film or the writer is a Christian, if I’ve done my research correctly.  I just wish that somehow, someway we could get a really funny Christian film made.  I’m glad Hollywood has bankrolled a movie like this, but I’d love to see someone who specializes in Christian filmmaking make a truly funny movie.  I’m convinced it can be done.

Jeff - I too am a huge Steve Carell fan. I was a little worried going in to the movie but was very pleasantly surprised. I think this movie qualifies as a really funny Christian film. The movie isn’t in your face preachy which I think is a very good thing. There are a lot of teachable moments but it isn’t shoved down your throat! This movie deserves to be one of the greatest of the year!

Jesus is the resurrection and the life.  Of course he heals amputees.
This is only a problem for us if 1. we assume he’ll do it all the time (like a great big cosmic vending machine), or 2. we don’t really believe that Jesus has conquered the world.
The comments so far have been spot on.  God is in the process of redeeming all of Creation.  Sometimes when we cooperate with him, he gives us a sign (though these signs are meant to point beyond themselves, of course), other times he doesn’t--and I’m sure many of us are upset with him about that.  But life goes on.
Thing is, God doesn’t want a bunch of wealthy, healthy disciples.  No, he wants a bunch of faithful disciples.  Most of the time, this will actually involve more suffering than most people.  But sometimes God’s extravagant nature bursts through (as a manifestation of his Reign, his Kingdom, and his sovereignty).  He can’t be contained.  To him be the glory.
    My two cents.

Daniel—You are right on. We have to keep ourselves from both ruts--one that says that we create the kingdom of God in our own power and the other that says that the kingdom has not come at all.

I think the Lord does want us to have enough money for what we need in life and enough to share with others (this would be my definition of wealthy). I also believe that the Lord wants his people to be healthy and live a healthy lifestyle free of heart disease and the like. AND I believe he wants us to be faithful. I don’t think that wealthy (as defined above) and healthy are necessarily in opposition to faithfulness.

I think we are saying the same thing.

I have been involved in the planning, production and execution of the ArkAlmighty.com site and the kit that has been made available to all churches who are interested in being a part of the kindness campaign connected with Evan Almighty.  If any nay sayers watch the video that has been put together (at great expense - the cost of this site is far beyond any chritian site on the internet - take my word on that - all paid for by Universal) - makes it very clear - what is being promoted is the power of kindness.  As Romans 2:4 puts it “God’s kindness.”
It is amazing that some not only see the glass half empty but believe there is a conspiracy afoot among glass manufacturers - “They are drilling tiny holes in the glasses but only the glasses of Christians so only our glasses leak...” Here’s an idea - what if God actually gave us favor (that’s a biblical word) in the eyes of Universal Pictures and they saw that the Church could use a leg up in the eyes of the public in general - instead of being famous for being mean we could use a redemptive jumpstart.  Wow, what a thought.

Just my two cents worth..... e-harmony… They provide a specific service.... that’s their business.  If you’re a buddhist and you go to a Baptist church to examine them you don’t say they’re discriminating against you on religious means.  If you are lactose intolerant and you go to an ice cream parlor you don’t claim discrimination for dietary restrictions.  Specific service is not discrimination.  Plus.... if we examine the word discrimination.... it’s not bad… only certain types are bad..... to discriminate means to differntiate.... we do this every day.  Is it right or wrong?, good or bad, correct or incorrect, right or left, effective or not.....  Specific service gives us good service when done in the love of Christ and it keeps us from sinning (bad discrimination).
“Walk by the Spirit and you will not fulfill the desires of the sinful nature” -Apostle Paul (ephesians)
