Today’s Buzz: King James Only, Paige Patterson’s Hide, Shot Glasses, and More…

Well, it's been a while since we did the "Today's Buzz" thing... and I have a few things to share this morning... bits and pieces from around the church world that you may (or may not) find interesting. So, hang on... here we go:

North Carolina Church Marketing with Shot Glasses
To get people to attend his new church campus, Robbie McLaughlin is sending his message out to where the people are.  Next Friday, staffers from Next Level Church of Matthews will go to bars in the Ballantyne area of Charlotte to hand out shot glasses which ask patrons to “give us a shot” and bear the slogan, “Real church for real people.” The idea is to draw people to the Ballantyne campus, which opens next month.  McLaughlin is the pastor, and said he is confident that it will be controversial, but he said the goal is not necessarily to impress people who already go to church. He said it’s to impress people who don’t.  More here... What do you think?  Is it worth a shot?  (Get it?… Shot...)

Creflo Dollar:  Don’t Get All Bent Out of Shape About Multiple Homes
“[W]e don’t have any problems with movie stars having more than one home. We don’t have any problems with sports people having more than one home. But, boy, if you get a man of God that has more than one home, then he’s got to be doing something wrong.” (He said this on Larry King Live recently...)

John Grisham Will Address Baptist Group
John Grisham will make a rare speech on Jan. 31, when he’ll address the “New Baptist Covenant” conference taking place in Atlanta. The covenant, organized by Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and other moderate to liberal Baptists, has as its stated goal the reaffirmation of “traditional Baptist values, including sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ” and “the biblical mandate to promote peace with justice, to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, care for the sick and the marginalized, and promote religious liberty and respect for religious diversity.” More here...

Group Wants Paige Patterson’s Suspended
The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests has asked Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary trustees to suspend seminary President Paige Patterson, alleging that Patterson “turned a blind eye to clergy sex abuse” by a former Richardson pastor.  Patterson responded that the network (SNAP) has made “snap judgments” that are “misinformed and inaccurate.” More here...

We are as “King James Only” as one can be...
One of the more interesting doctrinal statements I’ve seen… “We are as “King James Only” as one can be.  Don’t even consider for a moment quoting any Greek or Hebrew definitions and/or those infamous ‘better words,’ etc. that seem to go with today’s so-called modern Biblical scholarship.  We want God’s words, not principles.  We believe the KJB is the inspired and preserved word and words of God - it makes no sense to us to lean backward into the past nor is there anything ‘new’ coming other than Christ Himself.  We believe that which is perfect to be the King James Bible and that it has all come spiritually. I Corinthians 13:10 I won’t even take up my time with anyone arguing with them about the originals, etc.  We are face to face spiritually today through that King James Bible and someday we will be physically face to face with the Saviour Himself.” Wow… that’s something to chew on!

OK… that’s it for today… hope you have a great week!

Todd

"If the King James was good enough for Paul and Peter, then it’s good enough for me.” I actually heard someone say that from the pulpit. Fun stuff!

Creflo Dollar - what do you expect from someone who believes that God’s reward for faithfulness and other pious activities is health, wealth and prosperity?

Todd - posts on the word of faith people are really counterproductive. Just my two cents.

KJV only? I can’t believe anyone would even consider this. It proves there total lack of understanding of how we got our Bible. Besides, which version of the KJV do they want? 1611, 1612, 1613, 1769?

Shot glasses - not my cup of tea - ha. But the point is that we should do whatever it takes to take the gospel to a world desperately in need of it. I’m all for leaving the 99 (KJV 90 and 9) and going after the lost sheep.

    Have a great week!

Ok, I just read the rest of Bible Believers Church in Touchet’s doctrinal statement. I can’t believe what I read.

Todd - is it possible that this is a hoax? They have a statement about guns!!!

“We love guns - we use guns - we shoot guns - we carry guns - the pulpit has a loaded one all ready for post-911 use.  If that bothers you, get one and try it - you may like it. “

Todd - this is too much. it’s got to be a hoax.

Paul is good enough for this guy, but Jesus isn’t?  Yowza.  We’ll be judged on Paul’s gospel?  We don’t preach Jesus’ teachings unless they are through Paul.

Boy, is this guy in for surprise when He meets God!

Maybe I missed it at the web page, but what is the “Greater Commandment” of Paul?

What’s even sadder is that this is in my mother-in-law’s hometown.  She would be sad, I think.

Am I in a time warp? Are you sure this is not Friday?

“He said it’s to impress people who don’t.”.  How sad.  If impressing is that what it’s about they should rather shut the doors and go home.  Maybe they forgot that the church is for the fellowship of the believers.

Creflo says, “[W]e don’t have any problems with movie stars having more than one home. We don’t have any problems with sports people having more than one home. “ I for one do.  I think anyone that lives an extravagant lifestyle needs to reassess their priorities.  Particularly as Christians, we are called to a life of service, not acquisition and accumulation.  I know that Creflo and others like him justify their lifestyles and their churceh’s coffers by saying it enables them to reach out and help others.  While they may do that, on the way they make sure that they accumulate goods for themselves as well.  When will we Christians stop being enamored with stuff??  There is nothing wrong with having things for one’s enjoyment, but I think our culture has gotten things out of whack and turned luxuries into necessities and marks of success.  Unfortunately, the Church has followed in this path, so our televangelists are right up there with all the other “stars” of pop culture.

Here’s a copy of the email that I sent to author of the KJB position:
Suppose I am a Korean Christian and my first and only language is Korean? Do I need to learn English, specifically English as it was spoken 400 years ago, so I can understand your King James Bible?

I will be interested in his answer?

The KJV Pastor is Mike Paulson..............He is for real........sadly very real.

As to the guns............there is a whole segment of fundamentalist Baptist Christianity that is very firearm friendly. As in..........I had an evangelist tell my Church that we should all buy assault rifles! Heard a well known pastor say it was every pastor’s spiritual obligation to arm himself.

As to the Korean issue. YES! The answer is.......since the KJV is perfect just translate the Korean from the KJV.  IF you get any other answer than that I would be very surprised (and I do hope to be surprised)

I knew this KJV only guy Mike Paulson personally in a past life.

Everything you read is accurate and true! You are reading what this man believe and he is arrogant and prideful about it as well.

Make no mistake there are more than one of these guys out there.... scarry that is all I can say....

Oh…come on, this has to be Friday?  I don’t know what’s worse the KJV guy or Creflo Dollar, which btw, I always felt was an appropriate name for someone that seems to have prosperity and the almighty dollar right up with on the same level with the virgin birth.

What’s sad is, both of these extremes do more to chase people away from the church they it does attract them.  I don’t care how many people that Creflo has that follows him, most of them are church people that are tired of being poor anyway.

Ah, about the shot glasses?  Hmmm….well we on the West Coast just put church invites and Bible verses on the back of bikinis at the beach.  Ah….just kidding… “gotcha”.

On the Creflo Dollar quote, my family is addicted to the new version of the LIFE game called LIFE Twists & Turns. There are various Career cards you get dealt. The card titled miscellaneous top career is Television Minister with a salary of 2,000,000 dollars a spin.

Here’s a shot in the dark. The people that receive the shot glasses might realize that the shots they drink just don’t fill the void in their lives. And if they use the shot glasses that get passed out there is a constant reminder of a church that won’t judge them.

I LOVE the shotglass thing. We’ve found that when we try to do church for people who don’t like church, we end up doing wacky stuff that people don’t like. Oh well, they’re usually not the people we’re called to reach.

KJV only? “We believe that which is perfect to be the King James Bible and that it has all come spiritually...” Idolatry. Period.

I am surprised that Creflo Dollar does not understand that, as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ, he is held to a much different standard than your average celebrity.  His attempt at justification sounds a lot like whining, and reveals more about whose example he is following than what he probably intended to communicate.

    Shotglass:

If you see the shot glass as anything other than a means to an invitation then you miss the point. Great idea NT. Let us know how it works.

"Believer’s Church"… if they deny the Gospel of Jesus, I’d have to smell a cult.  I’m willing to bet their Jesus is a different one, too.

If it were April, I’d be positive that was a joke.  I did have a guy tell me once “not to confuse him by bringing scripture into the discussion” when doctrine was the subject.

I wonder why people hate the Church?....

    Ron,

I’m not sure what your point is, but if you are criticizing a church inviting non-believers to join them, I wonder how you’d feel about Jesus attending Matthew’s party.

The KJV guy has lots to say about music too:

He has a sermon entitled: “How the Pentecostal flavoring has come into our Bible believing churches through the banjo, guitar, etc. in bluegrass music.  Music today has become the power of the spirit of the antichrist.”

Plus, the above comment mentioned that this pastor has a position statement on firearms, but he goes even further than that.  He says that he keeps a LOADED gun IN THE PULPIT!

  • Posted by jimmy

I don’t know what this guy has against banjos and guitars?  I mean, if he’s talking about autoharps I’m on board.

  • Posted by Bruce Gerencser

Forget trying to get this guy. Unless you were raised in this (and I was) you won’t get it. Everything Paulson does is standard operating procedure for those in KJVO Baptist Fundamentalism.

The stuff on his website can be found in hundreds of Churches in this country.

I know it looks bizarre from the outside but for those in it..............it all seems quite normal. You see yourself as a resister, as one being attacked by organized religion and the government.  You have the truth and you must stand on it and protect it even if it means taking up arms.

You’d be surprised how many of these guys think it is OK to bomb abortion clinics or shoot abortion doctors. I was visiting in a Church a few years ago where a man wanted a memorial service for the man who was executed in Florida for killing an abortion doctor. HE could not comprehend WHY some people had a problem with that.

  • Posted by jimmy

Anyone know why KJV guy would say this?

“We don’t preach Jesus’ teachings unless they are through Paul.”

    I’m thoroughly bewildered by this.

    Bruce!

Thank you for the comment I could not of said it better myself…

I too like you grew up in this type of church and even graduated from Jack Hyles college.. please don’t start shooting yet.....

Looking back on it all now..... there were so many things that were just insane and you were taught to not question anything. I remember one of the assistant pastors in a class say this… “If Bro. Hyles told me to jump off a bridge I would do it without thinking twice” he was teaching on loyalty....

WOW!!!!! But this teaching is what leads to this end....

We become an end in ourselves and everybody but us is wrong and evil.... The saddest part of all is that while the world is without Christ we fight other believers like they were Satan himself!

Creflo Mamon (Dollar) doth spake foolishly on the superfluity of naughtiness.  His houses art not the issue, his heart is.

I am suprised the church even survived before the printing of the KJV?

I guess I am really going to, well you know, I use the NRSV!

  • Posted by Bruce Gerencser

    Jimmy,

Many KJVO are also hyper dispensationalists. They actually believe only a small part of the NT is applicable today. To understand Paulson, you have to understand Peter Ruckman. DO a web search and enjoy smile

    Craig,

I went to Tom Malone’s school, Midwestern Baptist College, Pontiac, MI in the mid 1970’s. My wife comes from a family which is still very much fundamentalist. Heavily involved in Pensacola Christian College. Bob Jones friendly. Sent a lot of students from their church to Hyles Anderson in the late 70’s and early 80’s. The scandal with Jack Hyles pretty much ended all that.

I look back now and say WOW. Did I really do and believe all that? Sadly, yes.
