Today’s Buzz:  New Christian Website; Gullible Pastors; Pick-up Lines; Tattoos and more…

Today's buzz includes a new site for Christians, gullible pastors, tattoos, 9 pickup lines, and what happens when we rescue the wrong person from a house fire. Hopefully some interesting reading...

Christians Now Selling on eWay
Where else can you find a set of ceramic doves from The Hour of Power for $0.99, a complete set of Joyce Meyer books for $1.29; an autographed Petra poster with record for $1.10, 100 Lincoln cents blessed by Oral Roberts for $0.89, or an empty toothpaste tube once used by Joel Osteen for $39.00?  Well, it’s the new ‘Christian’ eWay site.  According to TomintheBox News: “It was time that Christians had a safe place where they can do business on the internet” said eWay founder Mark Knickerbacher. “I’ve used Ebay for years to do my work, but just recently became convicted that it was wrong for me to do business on a website where other people are engaged in illicit deeds.” Some of the “illicit deeds” that concerned Knickerbacher were the sales of what he calls “questionable items” by others.  “Just recently I bought a some Thomas Kinkade prints from another seller, and I started looking at some of the other items he had for sale” he said. “It turned out that this guy was selling a set of beer glasses too! I was totally offended, so I canceled our transaction and never sent in payment. He got really upset with me and left me negative feedback, which I thought was uncalled for. So I left him negative feedback too warning people, ‘Hey, watch out for this guy. Don’t let the Thomas Kinkade stuff fool you!” You can read more here... Ahh… satire… you’ve got to love it.

Speaking of Satire… Some Pastors are Really Gullible.
See this post. “There have been rampant reports that Willowcreek is shutting down for summer - IT IS NOT TRUE!!! Monday Morning Insight did it as a joke.” Rampant Reports?  Well, it must have created some kind of buzz.  I’ve received at least two emails from pastors in the past two weeks asking me to ‘better research’ my story about Willow Creek shutting down for the summer, even though the three paragraph story has a clear ‘this is bogus’ PS on it.  Kinda funny:  One of the emails was from a pastor who chided me for the story, saying that he actually called Willow Creek to confirm that this wasn’t true.  (He actually looked up their number, called Chicago, and asked around for an answer rather than reading the whole three paragraphs!).  Yikes.

Tattoo Anyone?
Who says tattoos are sacrilegious? Does the bible?

Nine Story Lines To Use About Your Church
Guy Kawaski writes:  “If you’re pitching your company to investors, customers, partners, journalists, vendors, or employees and you don’t use at least one of these story lines.” Ok, as church leaders, I don’t know that we’re ‘pitching’, but we are constantly telling our story to those we’d like to attract.  Guy gives some great advice from a book called ”Beyond Buzz“.  Definitely worth the read here...

You’re House is On Fire… Not!
Now, tell me… how embarrassing would this be?

Todd here is another new Christian website that should be considered, and for those who dislike Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron, set that aside for 15 minutes and consider what is said at the site:http://www.hollywoodandgod.com/

I remember when I got my first tattoo, my (well-meaning) relatives argued that God wanted us to take care of our bodies and that tattoos were therefore against his will.  Sorry, but that’s just a cultural assumption.  If Solomon’s Temple was ornately decorated, you can bet I’m going to decorate my temple to glorify God (of course, this should primarily be taken in Paul’s language of ‘adorning oneself with good works’, but tattooing works too...).

Tatoos...interesting topic.  My take...it is not for me.  When growing up, my uncles and my father (the WWII warriors) had tatoos.  As a little boy, they looked cool but I noticed they were fading.  I personally did not want anything that would be in “permanent fade” mode.  To me it would be just another reminder of getting older.  The real issue concerning tatoos is a matter of purpose. In some cultures, tatoos were associated with pagan worship and that is why the Old Law warned against it.  Today, I believe some people just worship their bodies or the love of tatooing.  That is a modern form of idolatry.  For someone who just wants a tatoo of their favorite dog as a reminder or a cross, fine.  If a Christian were considering a tatoo then one should ask, “Is the tatoo offensive?  Does the tatoo glorify God?  Will it distract from ministry?”

Personally, I have no problem in asserting that most of those pressing forward in their “freedom in Chirst” to tatoo themselves are simply using this as an excuse.  How about an experiment.  Those with tatoos can all post pics and then we’ll determine how many of those are “religious expressions”.  Usually we hear “I’m glorifying God with my body”.  I’d like to see it. I’m not saying everyone with a tatoo isn’t, but we all live within the context of culture and it’s extremely important that we do not put any stumbling block before our brothers (or unbelievers), either because of cultural reasons or any other.  The article above said there were more important issues at hand and time should be spent on those.  For taking that viewpoint, there was a lot of time spent on the issue.  In a way I guess I might come to a similar conclusion though with a slightly different twist.... more time evangelizing the lost-less time wasted getting tatoos.
