Web Trends:  10% of Your Congregation Probably Has a Blog

Well, Barna has come out with a new study... this time on internet use. Here are some of the things I found interesting...

33% of computers have used instant messaging in the past week; 30% have sent someone a text message with their cell phone.

23% of computer users have a personal webpage or a home page on a social networking site like MySpace or Facebook.

10% of computer users have a blog; 14% say they have left a comment on someone's blog in the past week.

So... who are the groups of people that have the highest tendency to blog?

According to Barna, there are an estimated 16 million American adults who use their blog as a pulpit to broadcast their voice to the world. Blogs are most common among single adults, Northeast residents, homosexuals, those not registered to vote, and atheists and agnostics. And, if I could add one:  disgruntled Christians, watchdog groups, and people generally ticked about any church doing anything to reach people for Christ.

You can read Barna’s report here.

Any thoughts on this?  Do you have 10% of your church blogging?

  • Here in somewhat rural Kentucky, I can’t say I know anyone from here who blogs, although it seems like every other person has a computer with internet access. That 10% seems incredibly inflated to me, but perhaps we’re the exception.

I comment on blogs!  I would think a lot of people younger than me have blogs and those of my years comment on them.

We have very few who blog at our current church. Given the main age range thus far - that’s not surprising. Looking forward to that changing regardless of whether or not we’re still there when it does! Some are one of the reasons why I started though. They may not blog but they can/do read. And boy - do they comment in person sometimes. wink

I too find those numbers unlikely - here in the NorthEast I attend a church with about 150-200 weekly. I know of only 1 blogger (well, I used to as well, but not right now!). I am involved with at least 10 other churches in the neighborhood, and the ONLY other blogger I know moved to the Midwest last year.

Hmm. I think if those numbers are true they must have been asking people in the larger cities…

A little cathartic venting there, eh, Todd?  =)
