And Now There’s a Lawsuit… 49 Nashville Church Members Sue Two Rivers Pastor

    Bookmark and Share

Sutton lost a bid to become president of the denomination last year. He has served for more than two decades as leader of Nashville’s Two Rivers Baptist Church.

Scott Hutchings, the church’s executive pastor, has acknowledged that the church paid about $4,300 for a reception for Sutton’s daughter, but said the event was open to all members.

He said Sutton personally paid for another separate reception outside the church.

Stuff like this really make me mad. There is so much wrong with this... where to even begin?... Members of a Southern Baptist megachurch are suing their prominent pastor, the Rev. Jerry Sutton, for allegedly misappropriating finances and for refusing to allow them to inspect church records. The lawsuit filed late last week in Chancery Court follows allegations that Sutton spent church money on his daughter's wedding. The 49 people who joined to file the lawsuit accuse Sutton of failing to abide by church rules and punishing those who question his authority.

Our congregation does “carry-in” receptions.  Those who can try to bring in enough for two families so that guests and out-of -towners don’t have to buy.  Then the only thing for the family to pay for is the decorating.  Volunteers and family usually set up and tear down.  No absorbitant expenses.  My cake was even donated!

My son is getting married next year. Let’s see, if we invite all 8600 people who attend our church and the 1200 people who attend her church and we serve cake and punch to everyone that will run somewhere between $15 and $20k. We’ll also need to rent a collesium to hold everyone which will be another $10k. Then there is insurance, traffic control, sound lights and video so another $20k. So the reception is going to cost the bride’s family back $45k plus all the other costs of a wedding. If the church pays we’ll get sued, if we don’t invite everyone they’ll quit. Maybe they should just live together? No, scripture seems pretty clear on that. Wow, what a conundrum!

I’m a pastor, and I’m giving my daughter a ladder so she and her fiance can just go to Las Vegas and the “Chapel-O-Love” to be married by an ordained dude dressed like Elvis.

If the church thinks she should have a reception when they get back, they can pay for it.

I can’t believe these church members are suing the church. It is the house of the Lord. Every knows that to be a member if a Christian church that you should not question authority or use reason. They just need to show up every Sunday, give their 10 percent, fell guilty for their sin, and keep their mouth shut. They are giving money to the Lord and it’s none of their business what the pastor does with it.  It’s none of the congregations business. The church leaders will tell you when it’s your business. Be good Christians and do what the church tells you! The bible says in First Corinthians 14:34 that women shouldn’t even speak in the church so they really have no business asking questions. Now they are going to get kicked out of the church and burn in hell!

I agree, why don’t he show records if he’s really not guilty with the accusations and if he’s not spending the money of the church? It’s the church’s money, and even he’s the pastor of that church, he’s allowed to touch that for his personal needs..

It’s very bad on sutten’s part as he took the church money for his daughter’s wedding. He should be sue under law.

With identity theft, home invasion, etc., that kind of information in the hands of whoever wants it is just not right and I truly hope that the judge or whoever hears this case thinks about the privacy and safety of all of the members of this church.
