Anyone Still Convinced That Video Teaching Cannot Work?

    Bookmark and Share

I know many of the 1400 or so churches who did the OnePrayer campaign are represented here at MMI… so I’d love to ask you a couple questions (ok… three questions):

    1.  Who did you use for the video teaching… and

    2.  What was the response of your church to the video message concept?  (if you’ve not done it before)

    3.  Are you more open to utilizing video teaching in the future as a result of the OnePrayer campaign?

    I’d love your input…

As most of you know, I've been a strong proponent of multi-site churches (even before coming on staff at Leadership Network). I think it all changed for me when I visited North Coast Church years ago, and saw that video teaching really does work in some contexts. It definitely worked in Southern California anyway.

As the years went by and as the multi-site movement gained momentum, I've continued to beat the drum for the possibilities that this type of ministry, particularly the use of video messages, could bring the church. During the last month, our church in rural Ohio has been a part of the OnePrayer campaign. We loved the concept; and thought a side benefit of the campaign was to see if video teaching would really work in our setting (town of 8,000; county of 35,000; church of 800). Guess what... it does! We decided to use Ed Young, Jr. and Perry Noble as our 'outside' OnePrayer speakers; both was received very well by most everyone in our church...

      1. We used Craig Groschel, Steven Furtick, and Greg Surratt ..................................................

      2.  The response from our congregation was all geared towards the content.  No one even mentioned the fact it was on video.  I used the opportunity to work in our children’s area for my first time….....................................................................................................................................

      3.  We would definitely consider using it again.

I wish we would have known, we might have participated.

I am late to the party on this one, guys, as my first reactions to multi-site churches were very negative. But I’m coming around. Let’s face it, if a church in Rome can learn about Jesus from a letter from a guy they’ve never met, surely I can learn something from a guy on a video screen! And in both cases… Lives turned toward God!

So far we have used messages from Perry Noble and Greg Surratt.  I was a little nervous about utilizing video teaching, but after the first 2 minutes, those fears were gone.   People were engaged with the message.  Laughing, clapping, and repeating back words just like the person was standing there.   It excites me to think of the opportunities to reach different areas by using multiple campuses.

We did use pastors with two very different preaching styles on purpose, and both connected with our church.

Wouldn’t you know I’d be skeptical.

#1) Truth is much more important than UNITY. Obvious by today’s headlines the “Church” has a Truth problem… let’s get that covered before we even think about unity. If the title was called “One Truth” I might have ears for it.

#2) Having grown up in the “Christian” publishing capital of the World, Nashville. I can’t get by marketing and branding. I simply don’t believe it has a place in the Church. The Holy Spirit does better than any bit of our cleverness if we’d just get out of His way!

#3)Hmmmm, let’s see, 1600 churches, millions in the captive audience. How many of these men have a book to sell, are in the middle of writing a book, or are seeking a publishing deal? Again, being from Nashville and having worked in and around that industry. I am skeptical.

This is not to say God can’t use it, I just believe you can’t even think of Unity without the bedrock establishment of TRUTH.

According to yesterdays numbers somewhere between 18% and 43% of you will agree with me.   LOL.

      Hi

We had Craig Groeschel and Perry Noble preach so far and next week Steven Furtick.

Many people had concerns about video preaching beforehand but it was very well recieved. We actually did a survey in our church after the first week. results here. http://tinyurl.com/6fzgu7

Verbal resonse from our church was that they actually enjoyed the Perry Noble preach even more. And thats with for us in Englad is a strange Southern accent.

We would certainly be looking to do this again at some point.

We were originally going to have me speak the 1st and last week and then show Chris Hodges and Dino Rizzo on video. But then it worked out that this last week Dino could speak live. So we only showed one video. That worked well. We also hold a service in a bar on Tuesday nights and showed the video of Chris last week and we are showing Dino’s video tonight. Chris’ was well received and I think like a lot of people, we are experimenting to see if showing videos of other people speaking works, not just in church setting, but for us, does it work in a service in a bar?

      1.  We used Greg Groeschel week #1, I preached live week #2, Steve Furtick week #3, and will use Greg Surratt week #4.

      2.  The response has been almost entirely positive.  In fact, what people respond to (either good or bad) had been the message content and speaker, not medium/video.

      3.  We will definitely do it again.  The whole One Prayer experience (local missions, global missions, prayer, fasting, etc) has been a great experience for our congregation.

One of the main reasons I wanted to do this series was to see if video would work in New England.  My answer is that it 100% will work.

Some people will never like it or buy into it (which is OK) but there is definitely potential for it in New England.

Jud, let’s just say I am in the 67%-88% that disagree with you. But I will say that I only disagree with 77.5% of what you said.

Peter, that quote is too funny!

I don’t believe there was enough diversitiy.  It was unfortunate that most (sorry, I don’t have the stats) of the teachers were white males.  I would have liked to hear messages from some of the African/Asian communities…perhaps video teaching isn’t as accessible for them.  And there were also no female teachers…What was there was really good.  We had Craig Groeshel, Wayne Cordiero, and Scott Longyear…the last one was “Make us Dead”...very provocative, and very raw….fit our community best.

It has been a great series for us. I taught week one and have used Wayne Cordeiro and Vince Antonucci. We will conclude this Sunday with Craig Groeschel.

It has helped that I know two of the three pastors. They recorded short greetings to our church which we showed prior to their message.

The joint offering being taken to plant 500 churches overseas is very cool.

There are so many benefits to One Prayer:

      - feeling a part of a much larger movement

      - variety in preaching

      - three-week break for me preaching

      - relational connections between churches

      - experimental use of video teaching (it’s working well)

      - unified prayer themes on Tuesdays via the website

      - global dimensions

I agree that the majority of the 65 messages submitted were from white USAmericans (including yours truly). Hopefully there will be greater diversity next time (and I’m quite sure there will be a next time).

We have used Craig Groschel, Perry Noble, and will be using Dino Rizzo this Sunday.  We are considering launching a second campus using video and have used this series to test the waters.  The video teaching has been received even better than we had hoped.  We will be doing a survey this Sunday to get objective data on that perception.  People have been very engaged: laughing, talking, and responding to what each speaker has taught…very excited to see the final results of this experiment!

    14. Anthony Trask on Tue, June 24, 2008

We are using the highly spiritual ‘McGee and Me’ series as well as some more post-modern videos like ‘Facing The Giants’.....just kidding…BAM!

    15. Cindy K on Tue, June 24, 2008

Our Church ran a video series by Reinhard Bonnke, and it was very well received.  It was not used for the weekly message, it was used for a Wednesday Night Series where all small groups meeting that evening shared in the series for 6 weeks.

Women, Men, Couples, Young Adults, and the Choir, about 800 all told.
