Church Drops Electricity for a Month

Hendrix can’t even tell you how much money it will save. The lights and heat are usually on only on Sunday morning.

“We call it ‘Crosspoint Unplugged,’” said Hendrix. “It was really a bigger deal to go without doughnuts and coffee and only have one bulletin for three weeks. The idea was to get across being unplugged from some of the things in our lives.”

According to the Abilene ReporterNews: "Fortunately, the weather on the second Sunday of February was mild, so Jerry Hendrix, the pastor of Crosspoint Fellowship, was comfortable in his khakis and blue polo -- even if the electricity wasn't on in the small church on Chimney Rock. However, it was overcast, which made it difficult for Hendrix to see his congregation.

Hendrix wasn't complaining, though. It was all his idea.

Crosspoint Fellowship is eschewing electricity, save for the children's class, this February and devoting the money it saves to mission work. No heat, no lights, not even coffee, although Hendrix said that if it gets really cold this month, the church will turn on the heat to about 50 degrees...

I think this is a great idea. Living here in Ohio we had this experience not long ago when most of the state was without power for a couple weeks. You learn to do things differently. The greatest part of that time, was the fellowship. Having no power forced everyone outside, neighbors talked. Kids played outside. No TV, no computers, no video games, it forced people out of their routines. I heard a guy at church say that during the power outage he heard kids playing in his neighborhood for the first time in years. Neighbors were grilling out food that was going to spoil and sharing freely. When you take the value off the food, stuff that was going to go bad anyways if not cooked, people were freely giving it away and helping others. It was a great time of togetherness. But, as power was restored, it was back to normal. If we could have a passion to help others and to talk to our neighbors all the time, maybe the world would be different. So this church, who may be doing it for missions, may learn a thing or two in the process. Thanks for sharing their story.

I agree… this is a very clever idea (at least if you live in a part of the country where you can safely do it this time of year!) We do outdoor services in the summer where we basically unplug (we use a small amp and a couple of mics just to make sure the pastor is heard and run them off of a small gas generator), and it’s been a really unique & enriching experience.
