I have to admit, the, “Dumbledore,” joke got me laughing.
Humor aside, while we’re discussing the Anglican schism here, I thought that this video was quite a good one to watch, too. It’s when someone in the audience calls out Eugene Robinson to repent of his sins.

I’ve just started watching the Colbert Report. How am i supposed to take his vein of comedy? Is it all satire and sarcasm? Or does he really have legitimate ideas of what is right and wrong and he uses comedy as his vehicle to promote his beliefs?

Todd—it’s the Lambeth conference (FYI).
Thadd, it’s satire, it’s sarcasm, but of course Colbert uses his comedy to promote his beliefs (don’t all comedians?). Sometimes it’s helpful, sometimes it’s hilarious, other times, the comedy gets in the way of intelligent conversation (I always feel bad for his guests—they can only get in about a paragraph’s worth of content). So there’s this strange tension between Colbert’s goofiness and his intelligence.
But it’s good for the occasional laugh.

Daniel, you’re right.
However, I wonder about the wisdom of ordaining as bishop a man who says this.
“Just simply to say that it goes against tradition and the teaching of the church and Scripture does not necessarily make it wrong, We worship a living God, and that living God leads us into truth.”
An exact quote from Gene Robinson, about the time he was ordained bishop. Okay, if “to say that it goes against tradition and the teaching of the church and Scripture does not necessarily make it wrong”, then what exactly DOES make something wrong.
Would they have ordained a man who had left his wife for another woman and lived with her out of wedlock?
I do pray for the Anglican communion, I was in it quite a long while.

Colbert is one of the funniest guys on television. His humor is biting, strong, and I think often based on some of the absurdities which the rest of us are seldom able to voice. (At least in a way which is as entertaining.) I wish I was as able as he is to state my case. He does seem to use his guests as foils, but judging by the quality of guests they know what they are in for. And they seem to enjoy themselves. How are we supposed to enjoy his humor? Let me count the ways….
