Help Todd Score Some Points With His New Boss…

“As some of you know, I just finished a book with my friend Scott Thumma entitled Beyond Megachurch Myths. (To be released in August. Order your copy now at Amazon.)

The book is a research based look at churches over 2000 across the country. Our stats show that the majority of megachurches are between 2000-3000 attenders. Only a small minority are over 10,000 regular attenders.

That being said, I will say that in the past month we have been getting lots of reports of churches peaking over 10,000 people for the first time. Many of these peaks are related to holiday services of course, but do give a glimpse of what may be coming. At this week’s Multi Site Gathering at our Leadership Network offices, four or so surpassed 10,000 for the first time.

For most of the reports of those surpassing 10,000 for the first time, the bump was about a 25% over regular attendance. This conforms to other trends for one time attendance bumps. So, a church of 5000 may have seen perhaps 6500 for Easter weekend, and so on.

Anyway, I am interested in seeing reports from church leaders about their churches attendance bumps for Easter.”

Please help me out by telling us your Easter attendance experience.  I thank you.  My boss thanks you.  It’s just a good situation all around!  smile

    Thanks,

    Todd

As I've mentioned before, late last year I began a position working with Leadership Network. My boss, Dave Travis, has co-written a new book coming out later this year on Megachurch Myths. It should be an interesting book. In the process he's been a part of a ton of research of larger churches; and he needs your help (whether your church is big or small). Can you help me score some extra credit points with my new boss? Dave's looking for some input on your Easter Sunday attendance. He writes...

Todd, we averaged 200 going into easter, had 380 on Easter and have adjusted up nearly 50 people in regular attendance with 30 new decision for Christ.  Hope tat info helps.  (these are not just pastor numbers, these are the ones other people count.)

    2. nathan on Tue, April 24, 2007

      we had a 31% increase.

756 on Easter Weekend, up from a five-week average of 577 (highest attendance in this period was 582, twice.)

This is our third-highest attendance of all time, both the previous peaks were on Easter 02 and 04.

    3. Dave on Tue, April 24, 2007

Our weekend average for 2007 was 3750.

For the Easter weekend we had 5930, for a 60% increase.

    4. Jan on Tue, April 24, 2007

We had 61% more than regularly attend.

    5. Brent on Tue, April 24, 2007

      We saw a 39% increase (702 to 975).

Easter was also the last weekend of spring break and we are a church with lots of young families, so that may have had an effect.

We run 1300-1500 on a normal weekend at Crossroads Church, Cottage Grove, MN.  We rented out the local high school and had somewhere in the area of 2700-3000 people for Easter.  We could never have housed them all in our church.  We have seen some increase in the service I attend in the subsequent two weeks, especially this last week, that I would attribute to our Easter services.  We had more people than seats at our 11:00 service this past Sunday, and had to utilize some overflow areas.  We are in the planning/development/starting of a new facility to be opened a year from now, so our space constraints will continue for a while yet.

I believe this was the largest service ever for our church, though I’ve only been at this church for 15 months, so I could be mistaken.

We run 850 - 900, and we had a bump to about 1400 for Easter, since then we’ve been sitting at about 950.

      Hahahaha…

I’m one of those “other pastors.”  We have a congregation that swings between 150 and 175.

On Palm Sunday we hit 172 on Easter we had 152… Last Sunday we were 175.   That should really mess up your graph, but that is our reality in small town/rural Nebraska.

    9. Jeff on Thu, April 26, 2007

Wow. I’m going to reign in here under weight. Our church is a four year-old church in a small, rural town in south Arkansas - under 10,000 in population. We’ve grown from 20 to 60 in attendance in four years. Slow, steady growth. Healthy growth.

However, we’ve NEVER had an Easter or Christmas “bump.” Nope. Nada. Never. OK, well, not in the traditional sense you’re looking for.

This year, we gave out copies of Piper’s book “50 Reasons Christ Had to Die” on Saturday evening at the Wal-Mart Shopping Center Mall area-thingy. (We rent space there.)

On Easter, we had one couple show up out of the blue who had received a book! They’ve come back since then, and we’re trying to minister to some specific and significant needs in their life.

So Easter/Christmas for us doesn’t produce what it may for others.

We are another one of the smaller churches.  We meet in a junior high school auditorium in a town of about 28,000.  We had a definite boost for the holidays.  Going into Easter our average attendance for the year was 113.  We had 135 for Palm Sunday (+19%) and 158 for Easter (+40%).

    11. Jason Poling on Mon, April 30, 2007

We usually run 60-70 adults and on Easter Sunday we had about 110, partly due to inviting international students .

    12. Jerry McQuay on Mon, April 30, 2007

We’re averaging about 1,400 per weekend in 2007 and had 1,912 on Easter, so we’re right there in your 25% bump.

      ummm…about 8-9000 (adults) on a weekend
