How’s the Balance and Mix Here at MMI?

    Bookmark and Share

During my travels in the past few weeks, I've met a good number of MMI readers for the first time (and I'm sure I'll meet a ton more at the Sticky Church Conference and Catalyst next week). Everyone always says how much they enjoy the things I pick to feature here (of course, no one would ever tell me that MMI stinks to my face... they'd save that for an email!) But a recent post at JordonCooper.com got me thinking... He said that he has stopped reading a certain prominent blog because all they do is 'troll for controversies'. This got a response back from the blog editor saying of the said blog: "our value of edification will now unashamedly trump the value of participation."

Did you know that less than 1 in 100 blog readers will ever post a comment? I used to judge the success/failure of each post at MMI on the number of comments that it generated. I stopped doing that a long time ago.

I really do try to pick a wide variety of topics and things to write about here at MMI... but I wonder... how balanced do you think MMI is... really? Let me know by clicking the online poll below... And if you're man enough (or woman enough), please leave a comment with your thoughts. If you do... you'd be in the top 1% of all MMI readers for the day! Make it a great one!

I think the balance is pretty good.  I know that a Warren or Driscol or Women in ministry post will get more comments than a flood in Houston post.  I say keep up the good work and look for a few more “here is what’s happening good in a church” stories.  Maybe about a church that has had some success at closing the back door, or reaching a particular community or blending a multi cultural congregation…  That kind of posting is sometimes not to commented upon but certainly has great value.  Thanks Todd.

I, too, think the balance is pretty good.  I mean, it’s a blog.  By definiftion it’s stuff you find interesting and maybe informative and that you think readers will find interesting and informative.  There are plenty of blogs that are almost totally negative, and I know where to go if that’s what I want.  I think you’re doing good, that’s why I keep reading.

love it! keep up the great work!

i read especially for new insights into church ministry and unique elements we could use in the church.

not much into the controversy stuff. honestly could care less about most of that…cause my time is too limited to care about the nonsense elsewhere. (but of course some of it can be used as a tool as it sharpen us as iron!

so happy to be a 1r; today. (and thanks for helping me figure out that hellish sign set-up last week:)

      blessings!

I’m man enough. Todd, overall good balance, but lately, I think you’ve “tolled for controversy” just a teeny bit more than maybe necessary. On the other hand… some of what some find to be trolling I find to be good discussion starters. So I wouldn’t change much.

Thanks, Peter… I appreciate your input… any particular instances of ‘trolling’ that immediately come to mind?

      Thanks, man!

I think you’re doing a great job Todd. I like the balance here at MMI.

I think we all “troll” from time to time. It’s part of the strategy to engage people in conversation that will hopefully lead to community.

I think we all have to be careful not to fall into the trap of focusing on the “sensational” and “controversial” topics just for the sake of driving up numbers.

Continue to follow your heart. I appreciate the encouragement, the honesty, and the laughter you provide through MMI.

I’ve been following MMI for a few years now, and love it.  I don’t feel that I have to like and enjoy every post - though I do enjoy most.

One of the greatest benefits I have recieved from MMM is exposure to various God movements all over the world that I would have never known about.

It has just dawned on me how much this blog has affected my ministry.  Much of what I have learned from church leaders all over this country, and have therefore implemented into my life and church - I learned as a result of being introduced to them on this blog. Wow, thanks Todd.

I think sometimes the non moderated posts make it feel like trolling when it is not.  I think at times, very rarely, but at times a post needs to be shut down.  Overall I would not say you troll.  I do think there is a bit of an ornery man in you who likes to mix it up now and then.

First blog spot I visit each day ... especially on Friday! Can’t remember the last time I laughed as hard as I did after watching Tim Conway last week. Only thing I’d change: let us know when you’re not going to be posting. As we say, a day without MMI is like a day without, um, something you really like!

      Todd,

You’ve stated numerous times before that this is your blog and you post things that are of interest to you.. Unless that has changed - don’t change things. It’s up to you man to do with it what you’re suppose to. So, only you can really answer your own question.

As always - you and all reading and or commenting were prayed for!

      Todd,

a few weeks ago, I think, it seemed like you bent over backwards to create Rick Warren debate. That’s the best example.

But… I must stress… I’d rather have you create just a little too much discussion on that kind of thing than not enough.

Also, here’s a real positive thing… You have, recently, allowed a LOT of back and forth without moderating… more than I recall from say four years ago or so. I actually like that back and forth, when people can disagree vehemently… even if they are not always respectful…

Your blog is still my favorite web site!

    12. Leonard on Thu, October 02, 2008

No Peter you are wrong Todd needs to moderate more and if you don’t believe me you will be in danger of losing your standing in the kingdom of blog.

      Hows that for disagreement?

    13. Todd Rhoades on Thu, October 02, 2008

Did Leonard just call me ornery?

That’s the nicest thing anyone has said to me all day, Leonard!

      Leonard,

You’re weird-looking and your mother dresses you funny.
