If We Could Only Evangelize Like Coke Does…

    Bookmark and Share

    They continue…

This is amazing. Of the almost 7 billion people that exist on this planet 91% of them have heard of coke, that is about 6 billion people who have heard of coke, 5 billion who have seen coke, and about 3 and a half billion people who have tasted coke. Can we say that about our efforts?

    SOURCE:  Christianity Plus

Interesting facts given over at the Christianity Plus website: 91% of the world's population has heard of coke; 74% have seen coke; 51% have tasted coke; yet only 10% of the world's population has heard the Gospel. If Coca-Cola were in charge of world evangelism then we would be done by now...

Only 10%?  Really?  I may be naive,  but I find that one hard to believe.

If we could remain one “company”, focus our efforts on the “sale” and “use” of our product we’d be doing better too!  Too much focus on what the inside of the can looks like,  and not enough on the appeal of it’s outside to the world when the world looks at us.

It’s healthy, in my opinion, to be wary of marketing metaphors.  The Church is hardly analogous to Coca-cola.  First, and most importantly, we don’t offer a ‘Diet’ product.  http://www.mondaymorninginsight.com/images/smileys/tongue_laugh.gif

Second, I’m sure 98% of the world has heard of “Jesus”.  But there is a difference between hearing a word, and experiencing a new reality (e.g. the Kingdom of God).  Coca-cola isn’t in the business of transforming the world, they’re in the business of making a buck.  The Church however (sometimes despite appearances), isn’t in the business of making money.  Rather we are those who are called to manifest new Creation, to dance God’s cosmic upside-down dance, to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, and to experience and pass on the freedom that comes from being in Christ.

I’m not trying to let the Church off the hook.  We certainly have failed our job description.  But I genuinely wonder what the point is in comparing us to a corporation whose sole goal is to make money…

      My two cents.

coke is a lot tastier than Jesus ;0) just kidding. though i do understand the analogy you are making it seems to be one that might not bring the point home.

Bringing Jesus to the world isn’t as easy as coke saying:

“Have a Coke and a Smile”

we cannot turn around and say:

      “Have Jesus and a Smile”

Jesus is much harder to sallow…pun intended.

thus, we cannot turn to a corporate giant such as coca-cola for how much worldwide evangelism is/is not working.

Very hard to belive those statistics… As Homer Simpson says… “Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.”

As a former missionary and former missions pastor (now Sr. pastor), the numbers I’ve seen show between 1/2 to 2/3rds of the world’s population has heard the gospel. Accurate numbers are hard to guage with absolute certainty. There’s also the question of ‘have they heard it in a meaningful, culturally appropriate way?’ - another serious issue.

Nonetheless, while we can learn from marketing techniques that Coke et al use, we must remember Jesus’ words: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.” (Jn 6.44 & 6.65). We can pitch the ‘product’ but HE closes the sale.
