New Church On Track:  50 Choir Members and Plans for a Sunday School

This could be the best thing ever for Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church.  Those that want things as they were when D. James Kennedy was alive are setting up shop down the street.  The charge is being led by the former (as of a couple weeks or so) traditional worship pastor, the organist, the choir, and some hacked-off elders.

Around 400 people or so showed up for "The Church" (that's their name) and their first services on Sunday.  The service featured a fifty voice choir and a speaker who was one of 'Kennedy's protégés'.

"I don't think anyone expects to recreate Coral Ridge," said Samuel Metzger (Coral Ridge's former organis), who has set up a Pompano Beach office for the 400-member congregation.

Plans are to start a Sunday School and to have future speakers for future services will feature sermons "from others who were closely associated with the Coral Ridge founder."

"I don't think anyone expects to recreate Coral Ridge," said Samuel Metzger (Coral Ridge's former organis), who has set up a Pompano Beach office for the 400-member congregation.  (Oh, sorry... I think I already mentioned that).

    What would DJK do?

Really, this could be the best thing ever for Coral Ridge.

If you know me, I think it takes all kinds of churches to reach all kinds of people.  Contemporary and Traditional.  I do, however, not like the way this new church was started.  Spite and malice do not seem to be good building blocks for church planting.  I always cringe when someone takes their ball and goes down the street to play.

This way everyone wins, I suppose.  But I wonder how long the breakaway group will last without the personality of Kennedy around which all the other stuff revolved.  Building a church on the past seems to miss the point.  At least now Tully can get on with whatever it is he sees for CRP.

Good post. Now in my mid-forties, I’m approaching the time when many of the things I liked about church will be considered “old school.” May I have the same attitude that my grandfather had years ago, promoting the youth every time he could and helping to move the church into the future. I also agree with you that malice and spite are terrible cornerstones on which to build a church.

sounds like they think D James Kennedy died for their sins.  Sad that the church was once 10,000 people strong and now stands at less than 1/4 of that and then 400 disgruntled people split off.  But for Coral Ridge it will be good that the poison has left the body.

Sounds as if some are being unfair to those who left.  Without knowing the whole story we should give them (both groups) the benefit of doubt. Sounds like a worship war which is often found as a church tries to change its style of music.  May the kingdom grow through both.
