No, Really… Please… Keep Your Cell Phones ON During Our Services!

    Bookmark and Share

I do tend to love ideas like this that are outside of the box… you know… taking a problem (like cell phones that ring during the service) and turning it into a positive thing.  Can you imagine the impact of hundreds of people getting a call saying, ‘Hey, I’m sitting here in church… can I pray for you?” I’m sure it wouldn’t work everywhere, (or every week), but it’s an idea to keep in the back of your mind for someday!

FOR DISCUSSION:  What do you think?  Good idea?  Terrible idea?  Would/Could it work in your church?

Most people who attend weekend worship services are used to being asked to turn their cellphones off (which doesn't stop the confounded things from ringing at the most inopportune moments). According to the Dallas News Religion Blog, At Pathway of Life Church in southeast Dallas, worshippers are asked to turn their mobile phones on. Each Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. services, the congregation is asked to call people in need of prayer -- including those who cannot be at church. The lights in the sanctuary are dimmed, and the hundreds of lighted cellphones make quite a sight...

Oh my. Oh man. Oh woman. Oh child. This one hits very close to home. I can hear phones ringing - both on the giving and receiving. I can give testimony that this does work.

That actually makes a lot of sense.

Ok, what about this: “Everybody, we’re passing out the church directory. Call someone who’s absent this morning and let them know we miss them.”

No offense Dave but I think many people would feel like big brother was watching them if that happened in church.  However I do think if every person who noticed someone missing on any given Sunday called during the week to say, I missed you Sunday, is everything okay?  Wow what a good thing that could be.

I like the idea of calling someone we love and saying, hey I am in church right now and we were talking about people we love and appreciate and letting them know so the whole church has stopped to call and practice what we are hearing right now.

I love out-of-the-box ideas, but I’m not sure about this one. Is the fact that somebody’s praying for you in church more effective than if they were at home?

But I really like Leonard’s take on that idea. I’m about to head into a creative team meeting. We’re gonna steal Leonard’s idea!

      Ugh.

I think that this is an awesome idea. Similiarly, when I have been a guest speaker at different youth ministries, sometimes it’s hard for kids to get over the hump to actually trust you—so I asked all of them to take out their cell phones, turn them on, and then gave them all a phone number and had them text message what they were thinking, questions, how they liked my talk, etc. to a cell phone number. I had over 70 text messages. That’s not remarkable, except for the group was only 30 kids. They sent messages to me even after that service. I think people that embrace the power of technology are extremely smart. Embracing a potential problem and getting an audience to connect with you on their level. It’s awesome. Great article

I can attest to the fact that this is a beautiful sight during a special service at night as we display the fact that we as Christians are the light of the world, and we are allowing our light to shine as the pastor comment and pray.
