    Praying for Lower Gas Prices

OK… does this strike anyone else as corny?

I think it’s fine to ask God for lower gas prices.  But to hold a vigil at the gas pump (probably laying hands on the pump), and singing “we’ll have lower gas prices” is a tad bit over the top for me.

Kinda makes unchurched Joe down on the corner want to remain unchurched.  Forever.  I’m just sayin’.

    What’s your reaction?

OK... This story is from July 28. Wonder if this is what worked?

Two prayer services will be held at St. Louis gas stations to thank God for lower fuel prices and to ask that they continue to drop. Darrell Alexander, Midwest co-chair of the Pray at the Pump movement, says prayer gatherings will be held Monday afternoon and evening at a Mobil station west of downtown St. Louis. Participants say they plan to buy gas, pray and then sing "We Shall Overcome" with a new verse, "We'll have lower gas prices."

An activist from the Washington D.C. area, Rocky Twyman, started the effort, saying if politicians couldn't lower gas prices, it was time to ask God to intervene. The group thinks the prayer is helping, saying prices are starting to fall below $4 a gallon.

I want to know if this group is working as hard to do something about the injustice and extreme poverty in the world as they are about the “injustice” of rich Americans paying more to fill up our SUVs. (full disclosure: I own two SUVs myself.)

      Dear God,

We know we’re abusing your creation and consuming at a level far above our share, but we really don’t care.  So could you lower gas prices so we can continue to be irresponsible?

      Amen

This is an embarrassment (as indicated by the comments following the article) to Christianity.  God forgive us for our (myself included) selfishness.

I mean, I know God loves to hear from us and wants to be a part of our lives, even when we lament high gas prices.  But, come on.  It’s stunts like these that demonstrate how spiritually bankrupt modern Christianity is in America.

c s you could look at it another way, after they prayed gas prices started coming down, and if any sinners saw and heard it maybe they will see that god still answers prayer, it is however you look at it.

I’m not going to lie, I’ve prayed for lower gas prices myself. I haven’t gone to this extreme. But I see the people in my church financially hurting this summer.
