On another note… the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has issued a detailed list of inappropriate behaviors for priests, saying they should not kiss, tickle or wrestle children.  The newest version of the archdiocese’s Decree on Child Protection also prohibits bear hugs, lap-sitting and piggyback rides. Acceptable behavior:  priests may still shake children’s hands, pat them on the back and give high-fives. Hmmm…

And finally… James Dobson will be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame.  He beat out Dr. Laura, Bob Costas, and Howard Stern in the balloting this year.  I guess I’d feel better about this if I hadn’t gotten an email from Dr. Dobson’s Focus on the Family asking me to put my support behind James because of what a great testimony this would be.  Not sure why… but that didn’t sit real well with me.  I have a tendency to not like press releases like that.  Is it just me?

OK… enough of my thoughts for the day…

What’s on your mind this fine day?

    Todd

Here are just a few short, but interesting (at least I think so) tidbits from around the church world...

You heard it here second. Ingrid is predicting that Rick Warren will be offerend a 'highly significant position within the [Barak Obama] administration, possibly cabinet level.' I guess we'll wait and see. She also predicted a couple years ago that we would have the equivalent of pagan temple prostitutes in our evangelical churches. She's getting to be a regular Pat Robertson. Just kidding, Ingrid. I don't think Rick would ever take a cabinet position (and I really doubt one would ever be offered). And if it was, maybe he should go for it. What do you think?

    Oh, but wait... there's more...

Why do we have to be dogging other Christians, can’t we just get along?

      Todd,

I agree with you.  I like Dobson, and some of the stuff he’s produced over the years has been extremely beneficial to my family and me.

However, the “stuff the ballot box” campaign e-mail I got didn’t sit well with me, either.

I’m glad he got in the Hall of Fame, though.

      FYI Todd, it’s Barack (with a ‘c’).

The list of ‘appropriate’ behaviors is sad. It’s a move away from discernment and towards legalism made necessary by a lawsuit-phobic culture. It’s perfectly conceivable to me that in some contexts a high-five could be creepy and inappropriate, and that in others a kiss could be totally uncreepy and perfectly appropriate.

Bummer for rules that don’t allow for discernment…  http://www.mondaymorninginsight.com/images/smileys/hmm.gif

(not saying they’re a bad thing, just that it’s sad that that’s how far we’ve sunk)

      My two cents,

I can’t imagine Warren taking a cabinet position either, but I think if one were offered, he should seriously consider it.

Todd, as an English major, I would like to point out that the title to this post emphasizes the importance of the comma.  Just imagine it without the commas…......Yep.

      Okay, resume your regularly-scheduled discussions.

Nora,  you just made my day.  Without commas that title is sooooo funny.  But which one is Rick W. kissing and which one is he tickling?

      Thanks for the laugh,

      Bart

      Hey Nora,

Bet there’s some that will read it that way regardless of commas.  Just more wood to pile around the Rick Warren stake.

I was torn regarding the Dobson “ballot box”. Here are the questions I asked myself and others when we discussed it:

Did you know there was a broadcasters hall of fame?

Did you know the members were elected by public ballot?

Did you know that Dobson was nominated?

Can you name any of the other nominees?

Before you vote, are you willing to check out the other nominees to see if you would rather vote for them instead?

If you were nominated, would you want your friends, supporters, and listeners to vote for you?

Once I thought through that, I couldn’t help but place my vote.

I have to wonder: Did Dr. Laura and Stern recruit votes? Dr. Laura isn’t on in my market anymore and I haven’t listened to Stern in years.

Bart:  “Thanks for the laugh.”  You’re welcome!  I’m here all week! :0)

Dave Z:  “Bet there’s some that will read it that way regardless of commas.  Just more wood to pile around the Rick Warren stake.”  So true, Dave, but if Rick Warren reads this site, as he is rumored to, maybe he will get a little chuckle out of it! :0)

If the jealousy bug gets people upset over Warren, so be it.  He already said he wouldn’t endorse a candidate, but Dobson has….   It makes me squirm a bit when “pied pipers” try to lead people towards anyone but Jesus?  I don’t see Warren’s bridge building to be trouble.  Very good.  Christians have wisdom, minds, hearts, and the ability to pray for discernment.

      Call me crazy…..

Dobson thing makes me uneasy as well.

sounds like “Go see the Passion of Christ to break records to prove Christianity is a power in the marketplace… “  rather than for life-change type of experience….   http://www.mondaymorninginsight.com/images/smileys/grin.gif

      Good one, Nora!

I think Warren would make a good adviser to Barack’s campaign and to his cabinet if he wins.

As for Dobson, after he said he wasn’t going to vote at all, he’s gone down in my opinion.

    12. Carol Gill on Mon, August 18, 2008

This is an interesting discussion; however, I note that this is a “public vote” honor.  With that in mind, if I were considered for an honor and it was by public vote, I would let ALL my friends and associates know about it.  I would ask them to vote for me (just like a political election) and let them know how much I wanted it.  It would be a vote for someone I thought was qualified to be given my vote.  Dobson, over the years, has made a HUGE contribution to the cause of Christ.  He has consistently honoroed the biblical view of events and has been a beacon of Light in a sadly dark world.  I would happily vote for him because he has ALREADY been a testimony for Truth throughout the world.

    13. kc on Mon, August 18, 2008

When will Dobson and all of the other “biggest names in show business”, oops! sorry, I meant “ biggest name is religion”) get down off of their pedestal?

      Stuff the ballot box?

I guess Jesus should have done that to make Himself more popular….oh, wait a minute…..Jesus “made Himself of no reputation”.

All of this junk just keeps on getting more putrid as time goes by. How terrible of focus on the family to ask people to “stuff the ballot box”.

Just another reason why I don’t support FOF anymore.

    14. Don Railey on Mon, August 18, 2008

The email from Focus on the Family did NOT suggest a “stuffing” of the ballot box…it merely invited Christian people to vote.  I did. ONCE—I had the right to vote, just as much as Bob Costas fans or Howard Stern or Dr. Laura—don’t think for a minute that their “people” were not recruiting votes.  I’m glad Dr. Dobson will receive this award. He well deserves it! God bless him!

    15. Brian L. on Mon, August 18, 2008

I’m the one who suggested the “stuff the ballot box” phraseology so please allow me to clarify.

      1.  I don’t for one moment dismiss all the wonderful things Dr. Dobson has done for the Kingdom of God, and me personally.

      2.  I don’t for one moment dismiss the idea that he should be in the Hall of Fame.  Had I chosen to place a vote (I didn’t), it would have been because I wanted to based on how I feel about him and his ministry.  Quite honestly, I forgot all about it and therefore didn’t place my vote.

      3.  I DO have a problem with campaigns that ask the Body of Christ to vote in what is essentially a popularity contest such as this one.

      4.  I would agree that the other candidates probably told their listeners to vote.  BUT it doesn’t matter in the least what the other candidates do.  How many times do we hear of Warren and others “adopting the world’s standards” (a charge I deny in RW’s case)?  Yet when JD is up for recognition, we’re told to get on the bandwagon and vote because that’s what the rest of candidates are doing.

Sorry, but I stick to my initial feeling that I was and still am uncomfortable with it.  If you’re not, fine.  That’s between you, God, and Dr. Dobson! http://www.mondaymorninginsight.com/images/smileys/smile.gif
