Rocky 18, the Cleveland Indians, Church is the Safest Place, and a Real Bible Thumper

    Bookmark and Share

Here’s a pic of my son Tristan (far right) and his three friends that he brought to the game.  My oldest (Taylor) did not get in on the picture… (you know how it is when a 15 year old doesn’t really want to be seen with a bunch of 13 year olds.) QUESTION:  Who’s gonna win the world series this year? My outside pick:  The Indians!

    Rocky 18
Friday, we got to watch the newest Rocky Balboa movie (is it Rocky 18?!).  A confession:  I don’t know that I’ve ever watched an entire Rocky movie; but my wife watched all of them growing up).  Overall, it was a great movie.  I might have to go back and watch the others.  Then again, maybe not.  QUESTION: Have you seen the movie?  Like it or hate it?

Church is the Safest Place to Be
Maybe a church could do a marketing campaign based on this little tidbit:  Automobiles account for 20 percent of all fatal accidents, while 17 percent of fatalities occur at home. Fourteen percent happen to pedestrians on streets and sidewalks. Travel by air, rail, or water causes 16 percent of the deaths. Yet, of all reported deaths, only .001 percent occur in worship services.  Thanks, Ray, for that info. QUESTION:  Can you think of any place SAFER than Church?

This Guy Takes “Bible Thumping” a Little Too Literally
A jail guard has been suspended after allegedly thumping an inmate with a Bible.
James Lee Sheppard, 56, has been charged with two gross misdemeanors for allegedly swatting a Blue Earth County Jail inmate with the book, grabbing him by the throat and slamming him against steel bars on Feb. 8, according to the criminal complaint.  HT:  The Bible Belt Blogger. QUESTION:  Doesn’t this make you just want to slap this guy upside the head with your hardcover Dakes Study Bible?

OK… that’s enough for today, I guess.  I can wipe a couple more links off my cache.

    Have a great Monday everyone!

A few random thoughts and links for this Monday. First of all, I braved the cold and took two of my boys and three of their friends to a Cleveland Indians game on Saturday. After last week's "Snowpenning Day" fiasco, this game was pretty nice. It actually got up to a balmy 44 degrees this weekend, and it was a lot of fun spending time with the boys...

You gotta love Rocky.  I liked them all except for V.  I liked this one somehow differently, though.  It was cheesy but somehow inspiring to those of us hitting mid-life.  I also loved the “the world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows” dialogue with his son. For other thoughts on the movie go my post at http://www.kenwitcher.com/2007_02_01_archive.html.

I think Ken said it best when he called the movie “cheesy.”  Better than Rocky V for sure, but not what I would call a “great” movie.  It’s watchable and entertaining, but a bit cheesy and heavy handed.

Rocky I—a great movie, all-timer. I saw it with my dad and grandpa. I think it was the first time gramps had been to a movie that didn’t have a newsreel of WWII action at intermission!

Rocky II—ok, but it did get me fired up to get in shape for my last season of high school football “Just win, Rocky” It was also my first date with a real girl. That got me fired up too.

Rocky III-V—uhh…no. My son loves them all, to me they’re all just a repeat.

Rocky Balboa—a good message in the movie, but you have to suspend belief more than for Star Wars when a boxing commission allows a geezer like that into the ring (he’s much older than George Foreman). What was cool (my son pointed out) was all the references and cameos of other Rocky flicks. I hope it’s over now.

      Go BRAVES!!!!!!!!!!!

I liked all the old Rocky movies~ you should definitely check them out.  Haven’t seen the newest one though…

And, as a highly accident prone, clumsy person, I’m quite glad to be working in a church.  I feel safer already!  http://www.mondaymorninginsight.com/images/smileys/wink.gif

I’m with Peter.  I think this is the year the Cubbies could go all the way.

Then they’ll be sold and the new owner will move them to Indianapolis.

Hey, first the Red Sox, then the White Sox, now the Cubbies. It’s inevitable.

I used to say, if it’s ever a Red Sox vs. Cubs World Series, no one will CARE who wins! But they’d still all watch.

Now if the Cubs take it, everybody can start cheering on the Milwaukee Brewers for THEIR run at the big one some day. Talk about love-able losers!

(Glad to see I’m not the only Baseball fan out here. I’m in Pirates country though, so pray for me…)

Well, I have always liked the saying, “There is no place safer than the center of God’s will.”  And I am guessing for most weeks, that would include worshiping with your church family.

Right now I am in the center of a flood in my basement - trying to keep up with this New England nor’-easter.

World Series this year?  Go Red Sox!

      Love this site!

Baseball:  Go Mariners!  OK, how ‘bout the Yankees?

Rocky:  Balboa was good!  “Suspend belief” bishopdave?  Since when do movies accurately depict reality?  I liked the story.

Safe:  I’m safe with my wife and with a few friends.

Thump:  How ‘bout a nice old hard-bound copy of Strongs…
