School District Agrees:  Tucked Shirts Can Be Unbiblical

    Bookmark and Share

More from the Dallas Morning News article:

The school board’s waiver for Neyland raises an important question: Does anyone who cites Scripture get a pass on the dress requirement?

“I feel I am being persecuted for being a Christian,” she told the board before the vote. “There will be a day of reckoning, and you will have to answer to God.”

School board president Jerry Christian supported her request and said the student handbook for parents doesn’t even mention anything about tucking shirts in. Therefore, it’s unclear, he said

“Thank you, Jesus. God is good!” Neyland cried out.

OK, well... maybe not... but Dyker Neyland says she fought for her daughter's right to attend her Irving, TX elementary school wearing an untucked shirt because of her religious beliefs as a Christian. The Irving school board agreed with her this week and overturned decisions by the principal and district administrators, who had told Neyland that her daughter must attend school with her shirt tucked in. The mother says her 7-year-old second-grader, has the right to wear her shirttail out because of a Bible verse, 1 Timothy 2:9, which dictates that "women adorn themselves in modest apparel with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing." "I don't want her behind showing," Neyland said. "I don't want her body being exposed."

I think any parent should have the right to ask for a correction from the school board about age appropriate dress issues.  I applaud her for standing up for her daughter’s wishes. Especially since the question was not addressed by the schools dress code and that meant it was a personal decision made by someone at the school, probably without much thought.

That said, I would also say that trying to justify her own personal wishes by quoting scripture and claiming persecution does a disservice to God and the church. She should be ashamed of invoking God’s name in vain.

“To agree or disagree that’s the ultimate question…”

I believe we can’t apply what’s silly and what’s justifiable when arguing for personal rights…  as silly as this may sound to many, it’s also a serious issue to many…

have growed up in an urban society, I agree with this parent in the case of her child’s body parts being exposed due to certain clothing… it depends on the shape of the individual and the way the clothing is manufactured… I’m a witness to certian clothing fitting individuals differntly… as a father of three girls… I wouldn’t want my daughters clothing to expose their bodies…

it doesn’t make a difference if she misqouted the Scripture… what counts is her willingness not to expose her child… and if she feels that the clothing is too tight around her childs bodlily part… then who are we to question her choice?

Wow. I would be more likely to argue on the basis of personal freedom to allow the kids to dress as they like, not some crazy interpretation of a Bible verse.

It is ridiculous ofcourse. anyone should be able to decide what shirt her or she wants to wear. On the other hand it all depends on what you have been brought up with. If you believe that what the bible teaches is good then it kinda makes sense..
