Slapdown:  Mark Driscoll vs. Deepak Chopra on the Existence of Satan

    You can read more here...

Do you think these type of debates are worthwhile?

Is this a smart move by Driscoll?

Who do you think will win?

Set your Tivo or stay up late tomorrow night. Friday, March 20 is the day that Mars Hill Church in Seattle will host ABC's NightLine program and when Mark Driscoll will debate author and spiritual guru Deepak Chopra on whether or not Satan exists.

Also arguing against the existence of Satan will be Bishop Carlton Pearson. Tag teaming with Driscoll will be Annie Lobert, the founder of "Hookers for Jesus".

    Should be an interesting exchange...

    3. Steve Cuss on Thu, March 26, 2009

I just watched most of it online (for some reason, it annoyingly keeps stopping and reloading the first clip…)

I think Driscoll did a fine job - it looked like he worked hard and reigning in his sharp mind and simply presented clear, concrete examples of the Christian belief.

I don’t understand the appeal of Chopra, except that he is so vague that he appears brilliant, but to me, he came off very muddled and self righteous.  I suspect there is a harsh intolerance under that veneer of tolerance he tries to portray.

The Bishop was interesting - his name was familiar - last year NPR’s “This American life” did a story on him and its worth checking out.

kudos to Mars Hill for hosting this event - I think they did an outstanding job.

Meanwhile, I’d love to see Tim Keller debate any number of these people

I watched the debate last night. I totally agree with Steve Cuss that Chopra “is so vague that he appears to be brilliant” and that he is “self righteous.” If we throw out the Bible as authoritative, each person’s opinion about God is brought down to the same level. Chopra holds the opinion that God is too big to be contained by any kind of religious boundaries. But he has no real authoritative basis from which to ground that contention. It’s just one man’s opinion. I can come along and say that I think God is a big, green frog out in the middle of the universe. I have no authoritative basis for that either, but without the Bible as our authority, my opinion is as good as Chopra’s. I also agree that Driscoll worked hard at reigning in his sharp wit and sarcasm. There were time that he seemed to be almost bursting at the seams to cut Chopra to shreds (lol).

Thank you for another great article. Where else could anyone get that kind of information in such a perfect way of presentation.

I’m sorry but I don’t think Mark Driscoll has the apologetic, theological, or philosophical training to make this informative, objective or effective.  Will it draw some good ratings - possibly.  Will the Christians “win” the debate - well I’m not hopeful about it.  You can be sure that Deepak Chopra has done a wealth of scholarly research.

It’s to do with beliefs and no one should apologise for people not agreeing with them. Everyone has to be seen to follow the same path and to think the same way…is a shame!

I must admit that this is one great insight. It surely gives a company the opportunity to get in on the ground floor and really take part in manipulating something special and tailored to their needs.
