    So… How’s Business?

    Bookmark and Share

Over an hour later, the people in that boardroom finally understood his point.  They had somehow lost their vision and purpose. It caused their sales and profitability to slide.  But they didn’t realize it until someone like Peter Drucker asked a seemingly stupid question.

So… this morning, I’ll just ask you one simple question.  OK… really two:

    1. What is your business?
    2. How’s business?

I’d love to hear your feedback or comments… feel free to send them to me at .

    Have a great week!

It is said that management and business guru Peter Drucker once walked into a boardroom of a major company that was in a severe slump and asked one question: “Gentlemen, what is your business?” It seemed like a silly question. As the story goes, many people tried to answer Drucker’s question; to which he simply replied again, “What is your business?”

Our business is expanding the glory of God by making more and better followers of Jeuss Christ. As summer begins our “business” appears to slump. Worship attendance remains high but people take on so many other activities that they refuse to invest the time necessary in biblical community to take great strides in becoming BETTER folloowers of Christ. History has proven that later summer “business” will boom as children are introduced to Christ at Vacation Bible School (yes, we are one of those rare instances where VBS still accomplishes its original purpose). And MORE followers of Jesus Christ will be made 1) at an outreach we host at the county fair and 2) EVEN MORE followers of Jesus Christ will be made as our people live out the Gospel in their neighborhoods and among extended family. This is why I said business APPEARS to slump - while small groups and Adult Ed. takes a hiatus, people are actually stepping out in faith and living out the concepts discussed in small groups the rest of the year. They aren’t just talking about faith - they are living it out in the grit of real life.

Our business is reaching people with Christ’s love and participating with Him as he changes lives.

      From God’s perspective… he’s in control… business is great!

I’ve long thought the “business” of any business is to make money.  Under that umbrella are a host of specific ways to make money.  Our umbrella is the same as all churches - to glorify God through participating in His redemptive plan.  Under that general purpose we are intensely seeking to be a worshiping community of growing disciples living out Christ’s love for the world.  We boil down to three questions (or journeys as we call them) - how’s our intimacy with Christ doing?  How’s our relationship with one another growing?  How’s our influence among the lost increasing (or not?)?  It’s exciting to know how we are succeeding or failing in these areas.  Sure is alot better than guessing at how “things” are going!

That sounds a bit harsh.  So people taking family vacations and enjoying time outside are bad Christians?  My older daughter is on a swim team.  Every Monday night we’re at the pool.  Interestingly though, a lot of Christian friends have kids on swimn teams too.  Some of the best Christian fellowship that I have had in quite some time has been hanging out with them and catching up between heats.

Don’t be so caught up in your church’s programs that you start thinking that your “business” or God’s kingdom only takes place within the 4 walls of your church.

      Tim H,

ALSO… we are NOT good followers of Christ in the first place if we don’t spend the time “in the world” being salt and light. The time I spend with people who are far from God IS making great strides in becoming a better follower of Christ.

This “holy huddle” stuff is driving me CRAZY!

Point well taken. ... But the two aren’t mutually exclusive.

Agreed! Not only that, but discipleship and evangelism, when done biblically, happen at the same time!
