Soap Opera Star Fired Because She’s a Christian?

Patricia Mauceri says she was fired and abruptly replaced for objecting to a gay storyline because of her religious beliefs.

Patricia Mauceri played the recurring role of Carlotta Vega on "One Life to Live" for the last 14 years. But when she objected to how the writers wanted her deeply religious character, a Latina mother, to handle a storyline involving homosexuality, she objected. And for that she claims she was fired.

Mauceri, 59, a devout Christian, told FOX News that character Vega's gay-friendly dialogue was not in line with the character she helped create by drawing on her own faith.

"I did not object to being in a gay storyline. I objected to speaking the truth of what that person, how that person would live and breathe and act in that storyline," she said. "And this goes against everything I am, my belief system, and what I know the character's belief system is aligned to."

Mauceri said she was replaced despite offering changes to the script and hoping for a compromise.

What do you think?  Should she have been fired?  Should she have been surprised that they wanted her to do this role?  And how far can/should a Christian actor go?  Should they play prostitutes, child molestors, pimps, etc.?  Should they kiss someone who isn't their wife or shoot love scenes?  If their character supports homosexuals should they quit (or be fired)?  What do you think?

We only hear one side of this, but I have two thoughts.

      1. I applaud her standing up for what she believes in the work place. That is admirable, and she showed Christ, I’m sure, in other ways than just this over 14 years. Who knows who will come to Christ (or who has) because of her witness. Although I feel that the “gay issue” should not be our defining issue as Christians, she was merely objecting to the writers’ incorrect portrayal of a devout Christian woman and in this case it was a totally appropriate and right place for her to make this argument. She should be pleased that she did the right thing.

      2. She’s not a writer or a producer, and if she got fired… that’s life in show biz… We can’t expect the makers of the show to change what they think or want to portray merely because one actor speaks up.

Good thoughts Peter!  Thanks for sharing that.

Let’s say this woman played a non-religious character.  Then, let’s say the writer’s/producers asked her to do something that she felt did not align with her character’s development.  If she than spoke up and offered an alternative to the show’s executives, how would they have responded?  If, in that situation, they would have ‘compromised’, than we can surmise that perhaps there is some religious discrimination involved in this incident.  If, in the ficticious scenario, she would have been fired simply for not going along with the execs, than we can’t really fault the execs for the actress’s release.

A devout Christian?....then why is she on a soap opera?  Can anyone give me the name of one soap opera that does not promote any of the following:
      1. Homosexuality
      2. Adultery
      3. Greed
      4. Gossip
      5. Murder
      6. Covetousness
      7. Lust
      8. Conspiracy
      9. Hatred

Why would a self-proclaimed “devout Christian” be involved with anything that promotes all the things that God hates? Where is the pursuit of holiness?  Or is the love of money stronger than the love for God?

Good on ya Mauceri, if only more people would stand up for what they believe in. Thank you for setting such a great example, regardless of the consequences. It is just lovely to hear about a person with morals and principles. May God bless you.

She’s an actor. Her job is to portray someone not herself. If the character is beyond her reach, then she shouldn’t need to be fired, she should have stepped away out of her own convictions. I remember a story about Pat Boone who once stated that he would never kiss a woman in film because he thought it immoral. For the longest time he held to that view by refusing roles that would require a passionate kiss. That was his choice. This is hers. I applaud her holding to her convictions, but I don’t think much of her complaining.

Ok, I can see your one of those Christians that thinks we need to hide in our little cave and really, really, hope Jesus comes back before the big bad devil gets us!!  COME ON MAN!!!  Have you ever been involved in sports?  How about politics?  Wait, what about the music industry?  Wait, wait…...WHAT ABOUT BUSINESS??!!!  For God sake Jesus was a carpenter!!!  He MUST have been all about the money?!!
Whatever happened to being a LIGHT to the world in the DARKNESS of the world?  You can’t really push back darkness when the room is full of light!!  Of course I’m probably crazy and a heretic!!  That’s just my two cents!!

Has anyone considered why we like giving so much? Well, psychologists would have us believe that we want to be liked, to be appreciated, to be wanted etc but when it comes down to corporate gift giving, does that really apply?
